  9. Most people in the times of Copernicus and Galileo believed that the Earth was the center of the Universe, yes- but not that it was flat. Educated people have known that the Earth is a globe since the ancient Greeks.

  14. Modern flat Earthism is based mostly on Zetetic Astronomy, Or The Earth Not A Globe by Samuel Rowbotham from 1880. It started really taking off on the internet in the early 2000's, but it's now declining somewhat.

  17. Indeed. I'm convinced that part of the reason we have so many flat Earthers nowadays is that the anonymity and ease of the internet gives people the feeling of entitlement, which can lead to lack of respect and false confidence in their own opinions.

  20.  @kaneda7368  True enough, but it was also not going to change starting at least a couple hundred years ago, because of the accumulation of knowledge about distances between continents, observations of stars and planets, and Newton's gravitational theory, which explained how the solar system worked and fit the heliocentric globe very accurately indeed. And nowadays it's trivially easy for anyone to make observations that rule out a flat Earth.

How many times have you taken the altitude of Polaris from different latitudes? It's simply a fact: flat Earthers are wrong, and the science on this is so simple and obvious that it's appropriate to call them scientifically illiterate. Your Hegelian bafflegab notwithstanding.

  29. It doesn't take much skill to build a simple equatorial sundial, nor much intelligence to use it and see that it makes a flat Earth impossible. The problem is rather that they don't want to look critically at the real world, lest it show them to be wrong.

  32.  @JahGuarrr  Name one flat Earth scientist. Or better yet, ignore YouTube flat Earthers, ignore scientists, and go straight to the source: the real world. One sunset over the ocean cannot be explained by a flat Earth. Nor can the altitude of Polaris from three different latitudes. Nor can how sundials work. There are any number of simple observations anyone can make that show the Earth to be a globe.
