  1. Notes from an instrument maker who has seen and heard several Strads: Antonio Stradivari was a very good violin maker, and also a very good businessman. But there are lots of violins out there, old and modern, that sound just as good. Part of the reason that Stradivari has become "the" name in violin making is that we want to have a "best" person in every category, and for a number of historical reasons, Stradivari has won out for violin making. No, by any reasonable standard, no Stradivari violin is "worth" $16,000,000. You'd be far better off paying $10,000 for a just-as-good modern instrument and donating the rest to a hospital.
