Oh man. Another thing to worry about I've never heard of. Thanks.

As Mark Twain said: there are lies, damned lies, and statistics. That is, statistics based on false corelations. Good stuff.

The nice thing about believing in magic, aside from all the wonderful friends you gain, is that you don't have to explain anything. Magic takes care of it all for you.

I've seen no evidence against the general consensus that the Voynich manuscript is in no language at all, but is just faked to look like it is. The illustrations, which are nonsensical, support this hypothesis. Clever, artistic, but just a fantasy.

I'm still betting that it's a hoax. Sure, a medieval hoax, and very cleverly done, but it looks to be just a mechanically generated text and illustrations that are a potpouri of silly fantasies. Fascinating, but not a great work of science or literature.
7
Wonderful! Where'd you happen upon this lovely tidbit?
7
@joshuakerger2897 Ah, thanks.
7
Sorry, I'm prejudiced. I prefer human music to that of robots. Maybe because I'm a musician myself.
6
Nice as usual. And yes, trepanning is usually not the best treatment. But there's evidence that it was at least sometimes used to relieve pressure of cerebral fluids following brain injury.

@michealnash753 Yes, I have Scottish ancestors on my father's side.
3
R.I.P. Flat Earth. Born (?). Died 500 BC.
3
Infrared light is bent by refraction too.
3
@ThisReckless True. But scattering and absorption are not the same as refraction. All electromagnetic waves are subject to refraction.
3
How much of your research have you conducted outside? Have you built a sundial, for instance, or taken the altitude of Polaris from three different latitudes? Both are easy to do, and both show that the Earth cannot be flat.
3
One sunset shows that the Earth cannot be flat. No salt flats, water, or iPhones necessary.
2
No one believes we evolved from monkeys. We have a common ancestor with monkeys.
2
Most flat Earthers nowadays say that the other planets are just "lights in the sky".
2
You would be remiss if you didn't mention the wonderful series by Clickspring on recreating the Antikythera Mechanism: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ML4tw_UzqZE

Theories that "could be true"? I guess Santa and Mickey Mouse could be "true" too.....
1
All religions are "completely made up".
1
Yep, law of large numbers. No mysteries here. But sure, a lot of intelligence too- thanks.
1
What a perverse story.
1
@paganphil100 We have common ancestors with apes, monkeys, fish, bacteria...
1
Nero didn't actually play a fiddle as Rome burned. Fiddles hadn't been invented yet- bowed instruments were still almost a thousand years in the future. Maybe a lyre.
1
True, the vast majority of Christians are not flat Earthers. But many if not most flat Earthers are Christians.
1
No wonder Trump is President, with this music.
1
@0kh0b07 ?
1
Interesting stuff, thanks.

Needs more emojis. 🦜= 🦇

The sad thing about political correctness is that it leads many to believe that being a racist, a sexist, and so forth- is a good idea.
1
@leah rose No, I mean a pseudo random combination of letters that was coded on a piece of parchment or paper, and then copied by hand to the manuscript. I'll see if I can find a link to the evidence, it's been a few years.
1
@warmachineuk Hey, that's just business as usual.
1
Another great story, thanks. Cheers from sunny Vienna, Scott
1
That's easy. Young people are depressed because they see how we've fucked up the world.
1
The truth? Modern music is awful because modern people don't think.
1
Gravity varies very little across the Earth's surface, and the acceleration differences are likewise very minor, only about 0.3% maximum differential. That's enough to make the Earth not a perfect sphere, but that's about it.
1
Dirty tricks? All's fair in love, war, and capitalism. Or not?
1
93% of Americans considering themselves better than average drivers might work out if we're counting worldwide, and everyone else in the world was worse than Americans. That might even have been the case fifty years ago, but is no longer.
1
I'm sure everyone has their personal favorite scifi prediction come true that doesn't appear here. Mine is "waldoes", the mechanical hands Robert Heinlein predicted in Waldo.
1
I'm afraid I must agree with you. Nice work.
1
The spy balloon explanation is indeed plausible. But are you sure there weren't at least a few aliens involved?
1
Because I've seen a sunset or two.
1
I suspect Bermeja disappeared for the same reason God did: it never existed in the first place.
1
At least the British Government only took a few decades to pardon Alan Turing. The Catholic church took almost four hundred years to pardon Galileo Galilei. Baby steps.
1
@Npyne The most common answers I've heard are one, for the money: NASA fakes space cheaply and pockets the change; and two, to turn us from God.
1
Indeed. I wish we'd had a few more years of him.
1
Not to worry. We will destroy the Earth long before an asteroid does.
1
I experience the Mandela Effect all the time. I still don't believe that Donald Trump is President. He lost the election.
1
You left out all the Trump rallies.
1
Hmmm, is something a typo or my faulty memory, or does it represent the split of our time-space continuum into two parallel worlds? Difficult question indeed.
