Parents are overrated. So many don't realize the things they say to their children, off hand, can affect them their entire life because children's brain "circuitry" is malleable.

You do realize that plants are living also? It's shown that they react to stress. You're still eating something living, just something different enough from yourself that you're able to justify it. I find the hypocrisy from vegetarians funny and sad at the same time.

@frogballoon - You're correct and you're also just confirming what I said: plants are living things, but different enough that hypocritical vegetarians can justify it to themselves as "OK to eat THIS much different kind of living thing". Plants do undergo and react to stress. As far as the person who said their nervous systems are different and plants don't feel pain, that's true of many animals too and even animals that do feel pain don't understand it the way we do. Sharks are an example of an animal that doesn't have pain receptors on its skin. So, go ahead vegetarians, feast away on shark soup...if pain is where you're setting the bar.

@sgilmour47 - You're missing the point. Veggies like to tout not eating animals because they're alive. But animals are sentient! DH Lawrence: I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself. A bird will fall frozen dead from a bough without ever having felt sorry for itself. Simply put, animals feel, but they don't feel in the same way people do, in a way that we attribute to them, regardless, by anthropomorphizing. Plants are different enough from YOU that you discount their reaction to stress as inconsequential. You don't put your own feelings on them, you don't empathize with them. As I pointed out to another hypocrite earlier, veggies simply ignore plants' life because plants are so much different from us that it makes it acceptable to discount harming them. I'm reminded of a funny scene in Farscape where Chriton discounts some plant life before his shipmate, Zahn, reminds him that she's a plant based lifeform. Sure, that's fiction, but it uses comedy to highlight the point that veggies are OK killing plants because they're different enough from us.

@gabrielbjornursidae - You do make a good point that most vegetarians would probably not starve themselves to avoid eating meat if the farmers market or whole foods wasn't an easy option. There's a reason our ancestors started raising livestock instead of solely relying on crops. My thing about vegetarians is that they cry about how eating meat is taking a helpless, innocent life and then happily chew up a living plant. That's total hypocrisy and they can justify and make excuses for killing plants to fill their bellies because THAT life form is different enough from THEM that "well, it's not really alive" or whatever nonsense they spout. Where's their empathy for giving that plant a fair a shot?!

@frolickinglions - my dad had semi adopted a big main coon when his people just left him at the apartments when they moved. He survived on his own for a while and was always an indoor /outdoor cat even after "adopted". He obviously had all his claws and occasionally he'd get a little rough when playing. I remember once he reached out and grabbed the sides of my face by my temples when he was on a cabinet and I was popping up in a peekaboo type game. I said, "Okay. Playtime is over," as I froze. I gently pried his claws out of the side of my face without cutting myself. Luckily he was generally fairly gentle and didn't pull away even though he had been hyped while playing. Murder mittens indeed. He was all black with white on his chest and paws which did make them look like mittens. I'm also reminded of that event when I watch "I am Puma" and their cougar reaches out to bat or grab at his "dad's" face with those huge paws.

Most geobeats animals aren't quite "normal" and people are surprised a geobeats animal doesn't fit the norm? That's stranger than the bunny swimming.

I rescued a stray 8 months old stray dog off the street. Bony skinny and sick. I scooped her up and took her with. At the vet, getting vaccinations and such, I didn't ask about a chip. She obviously had been someone's dog, at least as a puppy. She wasn't put off by the leash and tried climbing on my chest (where barely her head fit) as though she laid on someone's chest as a puppy. Sure, she can be an Ahole, but whoever dumped her or "let her get away" didn't deserve a second chance.

@chemistrykrang8065 - Many animals don't "feel" the way you are anthropomorphizing. They physically do not have the nervous system built to understand physical sensation the way humans do. So, you need to fact check yourself on what you call "so much BS". You are able to anthropomorphize what they're feeling because they are similar enough to you. You don't do the same for plants because they are dissimilar enough. It really is a huge hypocrisy if anyone is being vegetarian or vegan because they can't eat a living thing. That plant material you're eating? It was a living organism, with a parent and offspring. It was something living killed to provide you sustenance. Eating a veggie burger is no different than eating a hamburger from a "killed something alive perspective". There is some evidence that eating a veggie diet can be more healthy. THAT is a valid, non anthropomorphizing reason to be a veggie. However, there's also evidence that eating whatever you want in portions equal to the required caloric intake (aka moderation) is also healthy. Even so, I wouldn't fault the "veggie because of health" folks because finding a diet that works for a person and that thru can stick with is going vary from person to person (also, "diet" defined as what you eat, not as eating a certain way temporarily to lose weight). Either way, next time you eat, enjoy the food that died so you could live.

YOU are anthropomorphizing that the fish is feeling pain the way you would. It's also human nature to want to be "not wrong" more than we want to be "right". So, this is what makes arguing pointless. You're going to believe whatever you want to believe because as long as you stand vehemently by your argument, in your mind you aren't wrong...even if you are actually wrong. Enjoy destroying all those living plants for your own sustenance!

@chemistrykrang8065 - Look again, that fish have pain receptors doesn't mean that they have the rest of the nervous system required to "feel" pain. In fact, research suggests that they can understand the physical sensation but aren't sophisticated enough to understand it as pain the way humans do. Part of the problem is the word "feel" which has 2 very different meanings. You are misinterpreting "fish can feel pain" as in they are feeling an emotional response from pain. When in fact, there's even a researcher who's said, "fish can feel (physical sensation) pain, whatever that means to the fish." He's pointing out that what pain means to the fish likely isn't what it means to humans because the fish doesn't have the rest of the nervous system (hippocampus, amygdala, etc) to interpret that physical sensation the way humans do. At the end of the day, you're ripping up living plants for your salad isn't different than me eating a fish sandwich. We're both destroying something living so that we can have sustenance. Again, you're just more easily able to empathize with the animals because they're more similar to you (but usually not as similar as you imagine) than the plants.
