These cars are likely using a high pressure fuel pump to feed high pressure electric injectors that give more precise fuel metering and therefore more mpg and efficiency. Government regulations are deployed without regard to whether the auto industry can actually, reasonably and safely deliver vehicles that meet the requirements. Those regulations and the lack of government concern about if they are reasonable or on a reasonable time table is the root cause of the problem. It's not that companies don't know how to build an engine, it's that they have to reinvent the engine to meet requirements. These fires are the learning curve for unreasonable government regulations.

@anthonystreeter7217 - I totally agree with you and didn't mean the manufacturers should be let off the hook, just that their poor design and testing isn't the root cause of these issues.
