  18. On the upside, Critical Role (no relation to Critical Drinker) is providing us some fun with their DnD related animated series. Incidentally, watching their old campaign sessions on YouTube were surprisingly interesting. I never got into the DnD thing, but do enjoy fantasy. Those guys just have great chemistry. The woke bits are even pretty well fitted into the relevant characters.

So, not always a bad idea, but studios seem to like betting 100s of millions (and potentially an existing fan base) on unproven writer /director efforts. It's strange considering how with music, artists are (or were) very heavily steered by their A&R man and often weren't writing their own hits (even if they were writing some material). Again, obviously some do both well but getting a song just a certain way so that a label would want to promote it for airplay wasn't often left to chance on the artist's talent and the cost stakes were MUCH less than in film with a higher return on investment than movies. There's got to be lots of pissed off people who are capable of writing and directing but never see the money to get a project going...pissed because of the Cathy Yans and Rian Johnsons do get the chance in a big, big money way.

With Morpheus not being Lawrence Fishburne and the big bad not being Weaving, those were red flags. A visit to Critical Drinker confirms my suspicions and reminds me why I never watched this. Also, fact check, Lana Wachowski is a man. I noticed Drinker referred to him as a her.

  51. Really, the 2nd and 3rd shouldn't have been made. They each moved farther away from original. With Keanu not valuing money, I was mildly curious if the script maybe was decent. Ouch. Definitely not. Why be part of this, Keanu? Critical Drinker is the best channel for saving me from disappointment and doing it in an entertaining way. This review makes me want to watch the first installment, which actually had a solid ending.

  52. 4:32 this image sums up post-Endgame MCU. This video is prophetic in light of female Thor and Disney not wanting Spider-Man in the MCU. Brie Larson has maybe 2 movies before The Wall runs her over. Female Thor actress, Natalie Portman, has been valiantly fighting off The Wall, but has enough gas left in the tank for only one movie. Heck, even a well liked character, Black Widow is slated to have the now-older Johansson playing her you character in a prequel. Non cgi makeup can only take that train so far down that track. MCU is dead-ending.

Even George Lucas' Episode IV was only the success it was because he had close friends able to tell him "no, there's a better way to do this." Taika Waititi should've immediately been pulled from Lady Thor when he said "the audience doesn't know what it wants until I give it to them." Translated, he's saying, "I'm such an egotistical narcissist that I don't care to understand what the customer wants." If you don't know what your customer wants, it's blind luck if you make the right product. You're throwing darts blindfolded after being spun in a few circles and just hoping you hit the wall the board is on, never mind the dartboard or actual bullseye. What I like most about Critical Drinker's reviews is that he squeezes more entertainment and information into a product that has 5% of the viewer's time requirement compared to what he's reviewing. The Drinker understands what his audience wants, humor (entertainment) and information, and he provides it in a concise, useful format that respects his audience's time. As it is, I was never going to watch Lady Thor. I can't stand the hypocrite Natalie Portman, the narcissist Taika Waititi, or the Abrams-esque over the top effects used to hide lack of story. I would like to thank the Drinker for valuing my time and confirming that this is a movie I didn't need to see and wouldn't have enjoyed.

The only reason the first movies didn't fail was the cast were well known and the movies didn't take themselves seriously. I'll admit I enjoyed watching Banks in "Walk of Shame." it was a pleasant popcorn movie. Banks was attractive enough and the film had a few laughs. I'll pass on anything else written or directed by the actress, though. These days, I'm crossing off woke, propaganda pushers from my list of entertainment I'll pay to see. I do find it ironic that actresses like Banks and Portman are making this kind of "stand" after blatantly using their looks and sexuality to get where they are. It's a bit like a Hispanic person who's made it to the US and earned citizenship then saying, "Build the wall! Close the gates! I'm already here." Ya, that's really helpful for all those trying to get get where you are.

  59. The ONLY complaint I have with this show is that they OBVIOUSLY wanted Bradley Cooper for the role of Homelander. When they couldn't get him, instead of changing the character to fit the actual actor, they just did up the actor to look like Cooper. It's so obviously miscast that it's annoying to watch scenes with Homelander. Like season 2 of "The Orville", this series gets better with each episode. Here, that's because the characters evolve and the story develops in an organic way.

I had no idea it was a straight up gender switch with the exact same cast setup (right down to the odd-man-out black character) doing the same movie as Ghostbusters. Wow. Lady Thor must be proud of these four brave women trailblazing a path for new, creative female characters in their own well conceived and executed films. (Learn from a true master, sarcasm I do.)

  66. Great review. I never saw Lady Ghostbusters. However, after this review, I have a desire to...re-watch the original. Fun fact: one upside of a remake this bad is that if you mention the movie "Ghostbusters" , nobody is going to ask if you mean the remake or original. I find it odd that the director kept the structure of the movie and characters, but exercised his "creativity" to remove all the good bits. If he had just done a straight 1:1 gender swap, with competent actresses, the movie may have worked out OK.

After Rian Johnson made some random Sci Fi movie with a "Star Wars" label slapped on it, I swore I'd not have anything you do with SW until Kennedy was completely gone from Lucasfilm and Disney altogether. She's a failed cameraman dressed up as a CEO. I haven't seen any of the shows since either. I'll continue to stay away from SW until Kennedy is gone and Disney takes the IP back to what made it great. Incidentally, Han Solo ALREADY had a back story that the Solo failure attempted to retcon. Seeing that the books were more popular and financially successful than the movie, I'll consider Han's dignity and past intact.

  100. The kids thing has worked before Stranger Things. Goonies, ET, Explorers of my childhood are films that I still like as an adult. I'm sure there are more recent examples. It can work if script and director are on point and there's something besides nostalgia to lean on. One thing that makes kids a good choice is that, unless they're Gary Stus, like Wesley Crusher, everyone can relate to them even adults, because we all have someone who doesn't listen to us when we're right in our lives and that's usually a part of kids in movies.

  101. Chibnal is an idiot. If you want good New Who, watch seasons 2 and 3, with David Tennant, and seasons 4 and 5, with Matt Smith and Karen Gillan. I first saw Dr Who as a wee lad when Tom Baker was THE Doctor. After hearing how bad current Dr Who is and seeing the reboot was available on Amazon Prime streaming, I thought I'd work my way through the reboot seasons. I skipped half of the 1st season because the shaved head dude was just too different of a lead in from Baker's character that I'd remembered. The 2nd season brings David Tennant into the role. He simply nails it. I enjoyed most of the episodes with him as The Dr. Also his seasons do offer a good bit of actual Sci-fi storytelling (as opposed to earth-Fi lecturing). Matt Smith takes over as the Twelfth Dr. It took me all of his 2 seasons to get used to him. He just didn't quite get it right. However, this Dr's companion was Karen Gillan. She's Scottish and definitely not crrrap! Besides being very attractive, she plays the perfect counter to the Dr. She does a great job of offsetting my disinterest in Smith's Dr. We also meet Clara, who continues on into the next Dr's season. Most of these episodes are also the expected Dr. Who. However, Smith/Gillan dous 2nd season, and show runner Moffat's last, begin to run out of steam. The same old, tired villains reappear. Oh, another Cybermen show. Oh, another dalek show. The 13th Dr is Peter Capaldi. On the nose of it, he looks the part. His portrayal or how the character is written is also just a bit off. This season also brings in Chibnal as show runner, replacing Moffat. This is the 1st season the earth-fi lecturing became noticeable. It's not surprising since Chibnal is the champion of Female Dr Who. The previous season was running out of steam and Chibnal has no fresh ideas that don't involve earth-fi preaching and lecturing. He starts it off mildly enough. But, I think this 1st season of Capaldi's Dr will be the last season I bother with. Chibnal is to Dr Who what Rian Johnson AND Kathy Kennedy are to Star Wars.

If these producers, writers, etc want to know how you do a movie with a "strong" female lead, there are so many examples of how to successfully do it, but these idiots don't want to make successful films. They just want to make propaganda films. GI Jane was a good example of how to do a military woman fighting "the male establishment" and deal with a controversial issue without alienating a male audience. Plus, Demi wasn't using the movie role as a soapbox. She let the movie and her character speak for themselves. Don Cheadle summed up why they shouldn't cast Brie: "Don't touch me."
