@friedrichgrumbeere8844 - In 1948, the Soviet Union took control of Hungary. Soviet control wasn't relinquished until the fall of the Soviet Union in 1989. Hungary was not an independent country during that time. All of the former Eastern Bloc counties are Soviet breakaway states as far as a delusional KGB agent, like Putin, thinks.

@friedrichgrumbeere8844 - That's my point, though. Hungary was "nominally independent" as long as it did what it was told. Which is rather the antithesis of "independent", much like Belarus is currently "independent" as long as President Lukashenko does what Putin tells him. It's reasonable, as you agree, that Putin, an old KGB man longing for the glory days of the Soviet Union, would consider all the "independent" Warsaw countries as Soviet territory.

Hungary should acknowledge that THEY are also a "breakaway" Soviet state, in Putin's eyes. This isn't a cold war. This is now a hot war. Hungary is absolutely on Putin's list of regions to recapture. Putin assures Hungary that he doesn't want to invade Hungary?? Those are the same assurances Putin gave to Georgia and now to Ukraine. "We don't even want to think about sanctions on Russia or worst case scenarios." This Hungarian minister is a fool, unless he's changed his view in light of events of the last few days.
