The European settlers that decimated the Native Americans weren't intending to be destructive and didn't have malicious intent. That didn't mean that the natives weren't decimated. Traveling between stars isn't a simple matter. They wouldn't be dropping by just to say hi. They'd be coming here because they need something that they've found here.

@giggiddy - You're making the assumption that we have a choice in the matter. And, if that something is water or a landmass with oxygen atmosphere, we're likely to be the animals who's habitats we cut down and pave over. You don't notice the wildlife that existed where you live, where the roads you drive on are, and where you were work because it's either had to move out of the way into a smaller range or stopped existing.

@changingmyworld-j9z - Wisdom and experience? Again, ask the Native Americans how that worked out. The tech difference was vast, but all the Europeans were concerned with was consuming and expanding...no wisdom involved. What wisdom and experience is it that prevents you from swatting at a mosquito or stepping on an without even looking down to notice you did so? Assuming that a race advanced enough to overcome the technical difficulties of space travel is wise and experienced enough to not harm humanity is folly. We'd be much more like the ant example than the native American example.

@RichMcc - I'm against the trope of "shoot it if we don't understand it", but there's absolutely nothing good about being the less advanced civilization in such an encounter.
