Nobody in the Middle East or Africa is friendly to the West. Period. Syria is probably on a similar course as Libya, post Gaddafi, as the various groups basically lead the country into civil war in order to fight out who gets to be in charge, last group standing. If the Assad military all go one way or form a kabal themselves, that group will have an advantage. Either way, it's probably better than Assad but still very bad for everyone inside Syria and the West. The good news is that the county and "winning" group will be so broken that they aren't going to pose a risk to the rest of the world for some time if a belligerent group (likely) winds up in control. Syria might wind up as Iraq 2.0, or a friend of Iran.

They can't. Even if they want to and foreign funds are available, the banks were charging a premium for conversion. So, they lose value if they hold the Ruble, but Ruble might be more useful than a foreign currency if local shops aren't set up to do business with constant money conversion and they'd lose value if they spend extra to convert to another currency.

Mig 21 ended production in 1985. For perspective, some of the Bradley fighting vehicles we sent Ukraine are probably of a similar vintage.

Eh, Ryan was better when he was an amateur YouTube instead of as his full time gig. He lost any credibility when he didn't update his "Kerch Straight bridge can't be attacked" vid and totally smirched his reputation when he said Russia didn't destroy the Nova Kakhovka dam. Either intentionally or through neglect or improper maintainance or procedures Russia absolutely destroyed the dam. Anyway, he is right about the YouTube thought police algorithm being overly restrictive.

@uffa00001 I wouldn't be sure that the new power in Syria is friendly to Russia. Muslims and Arabs have problems with Russia and vice versa.

Well, except for Hungary and Slovakia which are NATO members that openly support Russia's invasion of Europe (Ukraine being a European country). It's sad irony considering NATO mission is to defend Europe from Russian invasion. Then, there's Germany who has a leader, Scholz, with so much "German Guilt" that he's afraid to help Ukraine halt and repel the Russian invasion of Europe in the largest land war in Europe since WWII. Not all NATO members are more sane than the USA.

@juanitaviala hmm, 2nd comment thread on this vid where either comments are bugged again or the YouTube thought police removed my comment

I think the Russian personnel and equipment investment in these areas was very small, sort of like the idea of what the West is doing for Ukraine... Just sending enough so Assad didn't lose or get overthrown with Putin and Assad both hoping they'd outlast or be brutal enough to stop the revolution.

1:30 I called this. It was obvious once Assad fled that eventually things would reach a tipping point where military would flip sides as commanders try to save themselves.
