Syrskyi seems to be what Zalensky was looking for. It's been said he wanted to be more offensive than Zaluzhny wanted. Nobody ever won a war purely on defense, though.

@Play_fare those are not the tactics Russia has been using. Russia has been trying to use Soviet tactics which is push against the entire line hard until you can create a breakthrough and then pour reserves into that opening and spread out behind the enemy line. That's sort of how they opened the war in February 2022 coming into Kherson region and coming out of Belarus, before appropriate defense could be made to stop the thrust. After the first few days, Russia has only used the first part of the tactic, bash their head against enemy defenses hoping to make a bigger dent in the defense than in their head. Russia can't "push at the sides" because there are no sides. There's a 600 mile long front that stretches from Belarus to the sea.
