Ukraine was not attempting genocide of Russian speakers in Luhansk, Donetsk and Crimea. These areas were already semi autonomous within Ukraine and people didn't really care what Kyiv OR Moscow was doing. There was not prejudice against Russian speakers until AFTER RUSSIA INVADED Ukraine in 2014. I have a friend who was living in the Donetsk area since birth and called herself "a Russian girl" and spoke Russian. She's still in Ukraine, but in a city further west and not under Russian occupation. In 2014 when she FLED her home with her young daughter, she called Putin's proxy fighters (aka "separatists") "t*rr*rists". That was her word for the criminals and anarchists that Russia transported to Ukraine and supported with Russian special forces who instructed on basic tactics and equipment use and called in helicopter gunship support when Ukraine tried to respond by moving troops. The original "separatists" weren't Ukrainian. They came from outside Ukraine, Putin referred to them internally as "asymmetric fighters", and the first president of "Donetsk Peoples Republic" wasn't even Ukrainian OR Russian. This movement of people to Ukraine was similar to Putin transporting refugees to the EU border as a way of weaponizing the refugees against the EU aid to Ukraine.

After the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, my "Russian" friend, in tears, exclaimed that she is "a proud Ukrainian girl!" Her and her grade school daughter were both involved in making molotovs and camo nets during the early days of the war. She HATES Putin and Russia for stealing her heritage and making it bad to be Russian. She has only faced minimal discrimination while living in a Ukranian speaking city and that was only when she first moved there after fleeing Donetsk and Ukrainians did tend to blame any Russian for Putin's 2014 invasion of Crimea and eastern Ukraine.
