  1. Tariffs are a tax paid by the average person buying the product or service. ie, an American tariff on Brazilian beef imports is a tax paid by American consumers who buy Brazilian beef. In the worst case scenario, the American consumer doesn't want to pay the increased cost and that AMERICAN business closes because of the tariff. As an ADDED bonus, Brazil will probably put tariffs on imports from America. Unfortunately, since the consumer purchasing power in Brazil is less than in the US, consumers won't pay the extra cost of the item or service and while this may result in a Brazilian business closing, it also results in the US business losing those export sales. Since the US relies on imports due to the much lower cost of foreign production, American tariffs work against America...or, more specifically work against AVERAGE Americans (people who aren't wealthy enough to live off just investments).
