Bravo Lewis! Great video.
3
Lewis, not much that is related to radio in the Manchester area passes you by!! :-)
3
Great programme Lewis.

I found this video useful because it pointed out the absurdity of a law which, if broken, in most cases, has no detrimental effect, is next to impossible to detect if the listener does not voluntarily admit to the offence and for which the law is almost impossible to enforce. I, for one, did not know this before, but I am not a licensed radio amateur, and I am receptive to Lewis' 'free' education.

@laurensvisser7623 Thanks, that's a good data point. A good set up with an antenna designed for DF will be a bit better than this. So it may get to within a few houses rather than 200m.
3
Another great video, Lewis. I love the icy photos that are included - great touch!
3
Great video Lewis. Do I detect the start of a new series?
3
So.... does that mean that when you are listening to marine traffic on the Manchester Ship Canal that you are strictly speaking committing a crime?
3
Very interesting video Lewis. It's great that you pull all of this information together.
3
Great video Lewis, much appreciated. Keep up the good work.
3
Another excellent video. I especially liked the final picture with everything summarised in one place.
3
Cheers Lewis, another great video. I did the sums a few days ago, and I typically watch more of you, Andy Kirby, Paul Knox, and Big Clive (combined) than the entirety of the BBC, ITV & Channel 4. Sobering thought, eh?
3
@AutoShenanigans Haven't you got a motorway to visit? :-)
3
Great video, again. I was so tempted to ask "What about Duga-4 and Duga-5?": but thought it would be pushing the joke too far.....
3
I live by the Red Lion pub.
3
@kirkhamandy I agree that the electronics won't be fried; however, I was thinking more about saturating the GPS front end or causing high IMD products so that it instantaneously loses GPS lock and crashes before it can reacquire the satellites. I recall in an earlier episode a loss of control of the drone happened near transmission discs close to the Granada Studios.
3
It seems a bit harsh to have disqualified G3CXX over the clicks!!!
3
Hi Lewis, what range did these 10mW walkie-talkies have?
3
Lucky you!
3
Blessed are the cheesemakers..... and Biggus Dickus, of course!
3
My wife says that I have a leaky feeder. It likes to go in a tunnel, but it's not 400m long.
3
@ammocraft But they (Leslie Jagger) fixed it before the owners came back the next morning!
3
I don't suppose you could read the combination being entered? ;-)
3
Verry interesting, but I start to feel dizzy just looking at the top of the tower from the drone shot......!
3
@Aquatarkus96 daytime tv for the cat through the illuminated door!
2
Great video. I'm impressed that you managed to get hold of one of these phones in such good condition with plastic still protecting.the display..
2
@RCAvhstape I once flew to San Francisco airport, and when I walked through the arrivals area where the drivers had board with people' names on them, I noticed one for 'Monica Lewinsky'. With hindsight, I wish I'd waited a few minutes to see if it was the same person, but I was knackered and wanted to get to me hotel room!!!
2
@TheMajkla Yes, I heard him earlier tonight from Northants in the UK. A pretty strong signal.
2
@TheMajkla I tried listening tonight (17 Aug) and commenting on HFU, but there was terrible interference.
2
Very interesting - many thanks.
2
Lewis, I would be very interested in a field trial.
2
Can't be her, she died recently.
2
where is was made before - just it will be more expensive.
2
Any chance of you using a banana for scale purposes?
2
Yes, I asked myself the same question when I saw that both SO239 and phono sockets were on the back. I think the problem with 'only' an audio blanker is that the RF front end will overload , roduce intermodulation distortion and create a period of poor reception in teh radio as the AGC recovers. So I strongly suspect that this is a two stage solution that removes the strong pulses from the RF by using a threshold comparator to create a dead zone in both the RF and AF. The dead zone length following the comparator triggering is set by the 10Hz or 16Hz button. This slightly more complicated approach explains the larger number of components than a single notch filter and also the requirement of an external power supply.
2
Very funny!
2
Does anyone know what the white cylinder at the top of the mast is? Is it just a covering of the tower structure? If so, why is it just covering the top section. I\m assuming that it is too big to be transmission related.
2
@Richardincancale Many thanks. That makes good sense.
2
I enjoy comparing the old and recent photos to try and spot anything remaining. Not much here apart from some road outlines....
2
Nice mug! (No, not your face!)
2
Another excellent video, Lewis.
2
@scottlarson1548 The leaking of the two calls so close together always struck me as an attempt to discredit both Charles and Diana. I'm no detective, but the people who would seem to gain most from this are hostile foreign governments, anti-monarchy organisations and possibly Prince Andrew. Another possibility would be a blackmail plot aimed at C & D that was non-forthcoming. I tend to suspect (1).
2
Cheers Lewis - another fine video and thanks again for taking the time. Do you plan to make a video with the two CBs that Knoxieman repaired? That would be fun to watch.
2
@rootuser64 Yep, they can use google and YouTube 🙂
2
@almostfm Agreed. There there is also transmitter & mast maintenance and depreciation, rent of land etc. So probably no change from £150-200k per year. There was a mild hint at sarcasm in my comment, but the cost is obviously very high and much more expensive than an internet link and high-grade server.
2
I was a bit surprised too see the coax mounted below the hollow horizontal beams using standoffs rather than running inside the tube. It probably doesn't matter much, but the tube would provide some environmental protection.
2
I've heard about people stalking famous actress but never a cargo ship!!
2
@RingwayManchester I guess when you film an antenna we'd never notice 🙂
2
Great job Lewis. You know about so many pirates you'll soon be known as Blackbeard!!
2
@eliotmansfield Yeah, possibly not the best idea on reflection.....
