The word can be traced from an Old Javanese inscription in the 9th century." it should be called Jong. but, Dutch mispronounced it as 'Jonk', so the English learned from the Dutch to call it 'Junk'.

  2. the Song dynasty adopted junks and similar designs from Austronesians, so not sure why the Ming dynasty couldn't learn from Portuguese or Dutch heavy ships
