  1. not as simple as what these two people are saying. not as B/W. ukraine had a coup in 2014 which may or may not had involvement from USA. regardless, russia seized crimea during the coup, whether for expansion reason or security reason, russia took that land. after the coup, ukraine only liked USA (and EU), which is a security threat to russia. people say ukraine can do whatever it wants, russia has no say. but, if ukraine allows american military bases on their land, russia is absolutely vulnerable. so, russia wants eastern europe as a buffer between russia and NATO like how it was in 1999/2000. USA wants to expand NATO further and extend influence into ukraine, and russia is intercepting
