@ most ‘democracies’ are representative democracies, where people elect representatives. I always thought that a republic had an independently elected president where many of the European countries (once rules by monarchs) have a parliamentary monarchy form. In practice these monarchs have only ceremonial powers but they were never elected. In France and the US presidents are directly elected has the head of executive branch. I don’t believe there is any direct democracy left in the world (like ancient Greece)
