It was historically created for monetary parity. The CFA is pegged to the Euro. That does not mean that France controls the resources. The council of the BECEAO bank controls the CFA and buy services from France like guaranteeing convertibility and printing of the currency. Both services that could be purchased elsewhere if the BECEAO would decide to do so.

This ASS formation is just like Brexit the biggest propaganda scam ongoing today.

@FarsightAE of course, but nationalism is poor reason. Look what bad currency management leads to in Ghana, Zimbabwe, Guinea, Argentina. It creates a lot of misery for people. Cheaper commodities benefit mainly those that buy the commodities. Actually Europeans should advocate to drop the CFA and have them devaluate the currency every month!

Ah Rwanda, making up poverty figures, having luxury hotels occupied by public servants so it looks busy to business men and clean streets. It is a scam

You just echo Russian propaganda. Look at the Niger case. The real reason the coup happened is that Bazoum wanted to cancel the presidential guard’s slush fund being 70 million euro from the Sonadep Niger oil company, his plans were to reform it to Petroniger. The first 2 days people were protesting against the coup dispersed by presidential guards. The coup leaders needed the image that their coup was supported by the people so they used the M62 civil movement a group lobbying against foreign influences. Their leader was imprisoned. The junta released the leader and funded the M62 campaign. Remember the attack of youngsters on the French embassy, they were all M62. So robbing minerals right? The French company Orano leads a consortium with the Niger government owning 35% of the shares, the government also levies a royalty of 15% on all uranium, but invests zero dollar in the mine. So they get on 100 dollar of profit they levy 15 dollars and then again 35% of the remaining 85 usd. That is 45% of the profit with no investment cost. Mines are expensive, a new mine was budgeted to cost Orano 1.6 billion usd and market prices are low. So that mine is not being developed. So can you call this robbing I wonder. All these data can be found in the reports online. I spent quite some time sorting this one out for myself.

Lets have a look at Burkina Faso next. The charismatic Traoré created quite some hope for improvement, but he cannot create miracles. He quickly understood how important image building is, so he launched the construction of a new tomato paste plant. Such a plant was already attempted in the late ‘80 but was never able to compete against the cheaper imported versions. They kept the dead patient alive until 2005. So not sure if this new plant will survive without government subsidies. The real issue with Traoré is that he becomes more paranoid with the day. He fears a coup d’etat because he refuses to work with the establishment. That in itself is a positive signal, however it leads to a bad situation for the army as well. He monitors all divisions, reduces their access to heavy weaponry which weakens them if they have to fight jihadis. Instead he starts paying badly equipped civilian militias he hopes to control better. These VDP militias are no match for the better armed jihadis. Recently he cancelled another special forces unit from the ministry of forestry. Now recently there is news that he was able to secure 300 Russian mercenaries to protect him which makes him dependent of Russia. These mercenaries don’t come for free. So I am pessimistic. Looking at the stats of attacks and bombings on the ACLED website shows there is no decrease in the violence. The 4-5 drones he bought will not tirn the tide without involvement of land forces….

A few comments. GDP per capita is problematic with excess fertility. Second, if you want to compare to Ghana, you also may want to add that Ghana is virtually broke. Leaving France should be done if the African countries decide. One thing to consider is to store the foreign currency reserves somewhere where random military coup leaders cannot have access to. Also I don’t think that Ivory Coast will accept that Dakar keeps the reserves. So going outside West Africa may not be the worst idea ever.
