Yeah. He did...

"There's many a gentle person made a Jack. With old ends stolen out of holy writ; and seemed a saint when most I play the devil." Starting to get major neocon vibes here. DeSantis is on thin ice with me. We've seen the same kind of schtick a lot pre 2016 which was the standard. Sort of has a Pence pattern.

@ShotgunWizard he does not need to back him he just needs to stand on principal harder than a lukewarm statements that came after a week of pressuring to address the issue even once. He does not need to show fealty he needs to show considerable resistance against tyranny.
19
I can't guarantee there will be no indictment but I do agree they have nothing on him.
10
Hell, should they drop the charges and get egg on their face he should go and do the same thing.

Not the issue at all. They've been trashing each other back and forth and that's all fair. He doesn't need to be nice to him, but he does need to stand up against obvious political persecution and his response was lukewarm at best. If he isn't going to stand against political persecution against someone in his state that has prominence he's not going to do it in his state or nationally for someone that does not have prominence.

Not treat a police state move as a non issue. He only addressed it about a week after the initial headlines and the backlash that came out of him completely avoiding the subject for a week just to take up a position of non committal. If he doesn't want to get involved with drama that is fine, but his chosen response against tyranny was lukewarm at best. How can I trust him to accurately stand for others who are politically persecuted if he won't stand for a prominent persecuted figure in his words until most conservatives, libertarians and half the Independents in the country are demanding it of him? I can't, of course. Trading jabs with each other is fair game. Not taking a strong stance against obvious political persecution (at the very least in your rhetoric) until you have noticed an over 5% drop in your polling throughout GOP voters nationwide within less than a week. This man did not want to come out and make a statement. Due to pressure he was forced to, and it didn't even accurately address it. One more slip-up and I'm never going to vote for him in my life. I'm starting to get major neocon vibes that I only had himself from time to time now.... "There's many a gentle person made a jack. With old odd ends stolen out of holy writ, and seem a saint when most I play the devil". I want to be wrong in this, but it's starting to look like I might not be.

This. He nedds to reform his strategy now. Perhaps reevaluate the political atmosphere.
4
Same. It's uncomfortable that's for sure, but perhaps warranted at this point after this blunder.

Whether he has the authority or not he should have made more than a lukewarm response that didn't even address the whole issue. This is bad. He doesn't have to like him or even swear fealty to him, but there is a principle that is being forgotten here. If he's not going to take a strong stance against the persecution of a potential political opponent who most of his own base overlaps with, he's probably not going to do it for the average person who gets politically persecuted as well. As for Trump I would agree that in the same situation he probably would do similar- if he was not a "pleaser" personality with a big tent movement. He probably would do it, but not because he wanted to on the inside. I guess we'll never know now though because we know what one will most certainly do. Now... if the same happens in the future to DeSantis for some reason, Trump all Trump needs to do is take up the defense position for DeSantis hardcore to come out as the superior of the two when it comes to taking on issues of political persecution.

I kind of agree with you and Razorfist. Even more so after this actually. Still a bit nerve racking to think of though.
3
Not on the same ticket.

@DiogenesTheCynic. Lake is rising fast.
2
I will if there is any RNC tomfoolery. And it's not like the RNC doesn't want this. Thin ice. So that's at least one. And an Independent to boot. He needs to watch his ass.
2
Umm...

My personal distaste for gabbard aside, and my now questioning on DeSantis aside as well... I am pretty sure Florida law stipulates that two people from the same state cannot be on their ballots on the same ticket. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

@troyboy811 That is absolutely not what I am saying. I am saying he needed to make a more than lukewarm statement and that the fact that he may or may not of had authority (as I am unsure of the specific powers of the Florida governor, so I cannot make a definitive answer as to what he could have done beyond words) is irrelevant. He could have used better and stronger wording, and continued with the piss match they are both having another day. Please consider all my words carefully instead of just jumping on them. He could have made this into a big win for himself and instead chose a self damaging option. He didn't need to fall on his sword to look good in this situation and has sustained a net loss regardless. Relax- I'm not trying to attack you I'm just making a counter argument to what I think is a total missing of the point and deflection ignoring of certain aspects of this situation.

Outside of obviously focusing on a handful of failures compared to a mostly successful history from you, I'll admit there's a handful that act like that but most of us are a bit more pragmatic. You'd do better to you honey if you're trying to dissuade us by the way. Not vinegar. Name-calling is only going to fortify us. Sad.
2
@VespasianJudea I may disagree with much if the basis of his comment but I'm not going to simply throw an insult out at him. He's being honest with his feelings even if it's flawed and misdirected several places. We need to be more objective than simple black-and-white.
2
Obamacare votes, standard neocon war-mongering support, etc. Pretty run-of-the-mill for back then for back then. Perhaps he has changed but this makes me wonder. So unremarkable back then no one even knew who he was until he became Governor outside of Florida.
1
If indeed he's bought and paid for they won't need voter fraud. The swamp will simply the chips fall where the vote let's it fall. At that point they won't care who wins party-wise. Same way they won't care who won just like with Obama v McCain or Bush v Gore. It will be status quo once again if that's the case. That being said I'm I'm going to get him one more chance to stay in my good graces should I a vote for him at all in future. But he's on thin ice.

I would use a different example than Hitler, but there is some increasing to pattern suggest he is just another polished charismatic political climber playing to the whims of the moment spurred on originally by others who changed the in party landscape and spirit and well as half in independents. We never truly know what someone stands for until they reach the pinnacle of power, but we can hope. Still trying to decide 100% myself on him. I would more compare him to a Bush rather than a Hitler if we turn out to be correct on this.
1
I wouldn't go that far.
1
I think at this point they're in a slow death path anyway. Even if Trump were to get back in again I don't think they're ever going to fully recover to the level they were at during his first term. Far too much damage has been done and people are just turning away from corporate media at a steady rate anyway.
1
I don't care if he didn't endorse Trump. That is not proof of betrayal. It's the pattern around DeSantis that concerns me. That matters- not a refusal to endorse.
1
@dustinrisinger1958 I agree with your general sentiment, but "started" is debatable. He's just weathering the fight as well after a time, that's all.
1
With respect, without violating the tenth amendment, and without declaring himself dictator and removing governors with military force there was absolutely nothing he could do about the lockdowns. He also does not have unilateral firing firing power for most federal positions, and there are massive ramifications foremost positions he does have power to do so in. There are many people that keep thinking the president is an absolute authority figure even within conservative circles and I don't understand it.
1
They never needed to fortify one until Trump. They never thought they were going to need fortify 2016 because they were so sure of Hillary. They corrected that by 2020. Republican or Democrat they don't care who wins as long as they are in with the Uniparty. It's not party against party. It is populist versus establishment. If he wins it fair and square I may think about voting for him so long as he doesn't mess up like this again. If you happens to be a true neocon though, they may not even bother fortifying. Will be back to pre-2016 years and it will basically look like Obama v McCain or Bush v Gore.
1
She's stunning. Brave even. 😆
1
@NikoBased no. They have to exhibit as continued pattern of persecution or support. "They" in this context specifically means neocon establishment. When they give DeSantis the Trump treatment and drop those neocon endorsements all my red flags will go away. Until then I am still holding my final decision. I would rather lose standing by my principals than win by violating them l, and I would hope you would too. It isn't just about winning. When you get Shapiro types constantly promoting him (people who mourn the loss pre 2016 GOP and desperately want the return to the old in party status quo) wanting him to run for the presidency you can't blame us for being suspicious because why the hell wouldn't any rational conservative be? It is fine to like DeSantis or even prefer him, and have differences, but the strange pattern still stands.

@jellybiscuit increased hate speech laws, during a time when free speech is arguably the most important issue. I may not approve of anti-Semitic rhetoric but I'm not going to attempt to make it a crime to pass out anti-semitic literature such as pamphlets. I'll let them say what they want and ignored it if I don't like it. Also I'm still waiting for Disney to actually lose its semi autonomy. The governor is the chief executive of Florida and the law is in effect, so what's the hold up? Plenty of good policies I like, but it's just not the same standard I'm used too.
1
If he wins the process fair and square with no hint of honking by the RNC or states involved I will think about it. If he doesn't I will write in, vote LP, or not vote at all. I'm more willing to lose standing on my principles than I am to win by violating my own. I'm an independent so why should I care which party leader gets to play the same old same old? I don't care.
