For a material to exhibit ferromagnetism (i.e. what we call a permanent magnet) you need a certain number of atoms - too small and it won't stay magnetized. Also there are issues with switching the magnetization fast enough. Now you could envision to use a SINGLE atom's spin to store (or manipulate) information - this is called spintronics. But there are challenges to make it reliable enough as there needs to be very good isolation for surrounding environment. Spintronics is an ongoing research topic - would actually be interesting for Asionometry to cover it. It's a little bit like fusion power is for energy: the elusive holy grail of miniaturization.
