If you leave power vacuum it will be filled by someone else. Guess who (not Europe).

I was about to cure cancer but then mom interrupted me and told me to clean up my room first.

@RandyHill-bj9pc That's the thing. You never know where new endeavors lead to. He wanted to go to Mars but on the way of doing that created Starlink, which has obvious utility for many humans. We don't know what else they will invent on the way to Mars, but likely candidates are new ways of (efficiently) cultivating plants, maybe new ways of communication (due to the minutes long time-lag between earth and Mars).

They have a beer. Once they had too many beers they get thrown out.

Don't forget free college in most European countries. I think college tuition makes quite a big dent in American households, especially if you have more than one kid. Imagine college costs only living expenses plus $100 per semester. Also healthcare isn't actually free - it's mandatory and automatically subtracted from your salary (unless you are a freelancer).

The authors concluded: "The development of dedicated VUV lasers with narrow linewidth will make it possible to access a new regime of resolution and accuracy in laser Mössbauer spectroscopy and to perform coherent control of a nuclear excitation" I think coherent control of nuclear excitation is even more ... exciting.

I think you have a point. Landlocked Switzerland outcompeting the entire continent...

That's the idea of the startup Ossia that she mentioned, except they use a few 100 antennas, not just 3.

Some other commenter pointed out that Switzerland comes close to it.

The shorter the title of a scientific paper, the more ground-breaking the results. This one had six words, so pretty good.

Since you are not a nation there should be no problem mining it. It just prevents USA from declaring "Psyche is US soil - no one is allowed to mine there without our permission"

@eddiegaltek Yes, that's the drawback. Without gov and police it could become an anarchy quickly. Kind of like a MMORPG. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

The decay time was measured by the authors as 630 seconds

We also thought we'd never make a laser in the XUV.

Hydrogen is also the most abundant element in physics textbooks ;-)

That is why you should open a limited liability company. So you don't risk your entire personal wealth (and future income). As the name implies, it limits your (financial) liability in case of bankruptcy. Yes, banks will question your business skills if you went bankrupt but you are free to get money from venture capitalists / angel investors, like is customary in the US for risky business. And that is where a lot of difference is to the US: Europe doesn't have that much VC money chasing opportunities floating around.

@owenlouisdavid We don't need Gold. In case you didn't notice we can just print more money out of thin air. The availability of more money (or Gold) is not a problem.

Yes, it's called the particles "lifetime" - but that's a statistical lifetime, the actual decay of any specific particle can happen earlier or later.

Isn't that because basically every US software company funnels their Europe business through Ireland? I mean let's be honest we know it's due to corporate tax dumping combined with lax enforcement of GDPR and the like.

I heard Musk needs a lot of Nickel for Tesla battery production

You know, every European country has different laws about speech and generally if you break the law there are consequences. It's as simple as that. We have different laws and the US Constitution doesn't apply in Europe.

1: Who knows... 2: They decay into the first set of (stable) particle she mentioned 3: see 2 4: no. Some of these particles are created in nuclear reactions (e.g. inside stars) or when cosmic radiation hits earth.
