Actually we do have examples of countries that have resisted globalisation: Cuba and North Korea. They have kept their wealth quite successfully to themselves - often not voluntarily as trade barriers have prevented them from "giving their wealth" to others in exchange for goods. The people there must be quite happy too, as we don't hear of many complaints. Their political systems are also quite stable. They don't suffer from inrush of undesirable immigrants - in fact I heard they have net emigration. That is certainly good news for the remaining inhabitants as their jobs will be even more secure. I'm not familiar with the number of rules and regulations in those countries, maybe someone else can comment on that.

You can pad cars on the outside with cushions and thereby make the interaction with people more pleasant.

For the most part it has. It's called US Dollar.

Not going to happen, unless people start voting for younger candidates OR biology does its thing in 10-20years

Great interview. Would have been great to explore the question what could be the fate of Putin if he pulled back now. Clearly, Putin talking 5 hours to Macron means he is worried and seeking a way out.

0:40 It's quite likely that an apple was involved in Newton's discovery of gravity. Imagine Newton lying under an apple tree, looking up into the tree enjoying his afternoon. Suddenly he sees an apple accelerate towards him, maybe falling very close to his face. Isn't that unusual, he might have thought? Usually apples and things fall down, this one speeds sideways into my face! Ah no, I'm lying on the ground... That small change of perspective might have given him the hint that not up and down is the relevant relationship for gravity but rather towards. Smart people need only a small hint and they start digging until they find something.

You could have done it the Microsoft way: just let the bar fill to 99% linear with time within a reasonable time span - say 5 seconds if that's typical for the type of task. Then from 99% to 100% just wait until the task at hand finishes.

Damn, for David Deutsch I had to dial back YT speed to 1.25x Particularly remarkable that David Deutsch can deliver this magnificent insightful speech while balancing the broom stick.

Radical idea: Go for a brief walk outside, but without your phone (really, try it - you will be surprised).

The hyperlink is not the Lego block, it's the nipples on top of each Lego block. You actually only care about the block, but it's the nipples that link and hold them together.

Dreamer, I disagree that cooperation and capitalism are antithesis. Capitalism only works with cooperation: A company is a group of people cooperating for a common goal. To sell a product you need cooperation from the buyer (he has to trust you that you will deliver what you promised). Money is also built on cooperation - believing in the value of a certain piece of paper, that some foreigner will give something of value to you in exchange for that paper. Cooperation is absolutely essential for capitalism to work. It's not equivalent though, so not every cooperation has to be capitalistic (obviously).

How do you know Watson did not understand?

Wealth and ownership is btw another fiction. The fact that you "own" your things and consequently you are the only one allowed to manipulate them as you see fit - whereas everybody else is not. This is a convention that we all agreed on, not a natural thing. You know that because you have to teach it to kids that they are not allowed to take away other kids' stuff.

Would be interesting to hear what is the state of the art in organic chemistry these days. What kind of magic can you do in 2018?

19:19 OK, so Jeff Hawkins predicted in 2007 that Elon Musk would build autonomous cars before autonomous humanoid robots

I think you are over-generalizing. Just because one specific measure did not work doesn't mean that nothing did work. In fact life in Africa improved a lot in the past decades. You can look up hard numbers on gapminder dot org.

I sometimes find it astounding how much space architects devote to stairs. Just look at 2:23 almost the entire space is filled with the staircase.

We want less suffering, don't we? It's not necessary that each and every human creates truly novel things, a small fraction of innovation and creation is sufficient. In terms of suffering just keep in mind that not long ago child mortality rate was much higher than today and you could easily die from a bad tooth.

I think infrastructure is important but not sufficient. Smart people are attracted by other smart people. So in USA they move to Silicon Valley and New York. In China they move to Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.
