  1. I don't think "every manufacturer will want to build its own flavor" is generally true. In fact, if you are not a big (Intel size) manufacturer you may want to stay compatible with existing designs to encourage adoption. Yes, if you are Intel you may want to throw in your own salt to make life difficult for competitors. But I don't think this is generally true for every manufacturer.
