  1. 27:00 Re smart people make big mistakes - that made me think about Elon admitting that he attempted to automate too much during the Model 3 ramp. Probably the biggest mistake anyone at Tesla ever made and he admitted himself publicly he almost BK the company.

  3. IMO can all be explained with envy: "I was the smartest dude in school, how come I'm not a billionaire like Elon. Elon makes outrageous claims, people should not make such claims, especially not billionaires. His companies execute so well, it must be due to fraud because my little company struggles to even stay afloat, let alone grow. So I shorted his stock and now I lost money as well. My company is competing with Tesla/SpaceX and we are struggling although we coasted along so well for decades, it's not fair."

  4. Solar panel efficiency is growing slowly and steadily but we actually don't need to become much better at efficiency. Just improvement on production cost will be sufficient. Even if we stopped all innovation and prices/cost stayed the same it would still make sense to go with solar, we are low enough already - it's the cheapest form of energy generation in many places on earth.

  5. I think their first problem on Mars - before any human sets foot there will be to get a propellant plant going - producing methane and oxygen. That in turn needs a beefy power source (I think ~100kW). According to Mars Direct plan the first trip would deploy such power and propellant plant and start producing propellant for the return trip - so before first humans depart to Mars there is already propellant for return trip ready.

One interesting aspect about solar irradiance: The amount of solar power incident on earth in daytime (1kW/m²) is pretty much at the limit of what humans can survive without protection (like shade). If it were 2x as much we'd have real problem to even stay outside. So I think we are kind of lucky to have the max amount of solar that is survivable.

Yes it's sustainable because Lithum and Cobalt go into the battery that has decades of lifetime and after that they will be recycled - they aren't burnt to end up in the atmosphere unlike hydrocarbons. Why will Li and Co be recycled? Because their density in battery material is far higher than in ore. It's going to be cheaper to recycle than to dig out new at some point tin the future (20 years from now).

  14.  @allesdurchprobiert  Well, as an example you can take the fact that large fleet buyers have abandoned Tesla, mostly for the reason that Tesla service doesn't meet expectations (also also due to huge price fluctuations). It has been in the news that Sixt and SAP will no longer buy Tesla. These issues are within the power of Tesla to fix and it would be the responsibility of Tesla sales to identify and escalate any complaints before customers jump ship.

  15. It will be cheaper than have humans drive you around. In my area we already have shortage of train conductors, bus drivers and truck drivers. Basically every transportation company is no longer advertising their products but instead advertising to ask for drivers. That is how bad it has become. It is already now limiting services (e.g. we have cancellations for trips). So we not only need robotaxis, but also robotrains and robobusses and robotrucks.

  16. You could also say that the crazy wealth concentration is a consequence of employees having no stake in the companies they work for. Instead employees are compensated by a fixed salary while business owners (including employees who are compensated by stock) capture the remaining part of the value that is generated - and a LOT of values was generated in the past decades - see stock market. The way out is to follow the Tesla example: make all employees co-owners of their companies. This lets them participate more in the success and at the same time aligns incentives between company and employees. It would also dissipate the fears of robots or AI taking away jobs: if you co-own the robot and/or AI you participate in the value it generates.

  18. The grid-NIMBYism mentioned is actually already happening in Germany, specifically Bavaria. It is driven/supported by the ruling party there. They block the erection of wind parks with regulations (mandating a very large minimum distance to settlements) and they also blocked the construction of transmission lines across the country to supply wind power from the northern coast regions.

  20. It's not like CEOs at that pay grade will scramble to get a new job the minute they get fired. Keep in mind they all get insane amount of stock or stock options and these typically only vest as long as they remain employed. So CEO-optimized plan would be: keep stock price high as long as possible while selling as many held shares as possible and then let the company abruptly drive into the ground. This implies for example that they won't stop paying dividends (which would likely tank stock price), although they should to conserve cash.

  24. I think you could fly Starship around the world for relatively low cost - if and only if it is fully reusable. In the limit cost will be dictated by fuel cost, which is liquid methane and liquid oxygen. Both can be generated from our atmosphere by expending energy. That energy being solar has zero marginal cost (pure capex). So operating costs for trans-continental Starship flights would be mission center + inspection, and launch towers cost (people). Also this means is would be essentially net zero carbon emissions (of course need to be careful to not have any methane leaks). For transporting raw materials probably still more expensive than shipping but if you need to expedite maybe feasible.

  26. Most companies that give stock based compensation actually give you stock ON TOP of your salary, often at certain intervals (e.g. once per year). Sometimes you can also get stock OPTIONS, in which case you do need additional cash to exercise them to actually get the stock, but this is most often given to higher paid management.

It's not a given that people will want to drive EVs if they never had experience doing so. It's not a given that people will want to have a bot if didn't need one ever before. So much easier to be a follower and latch onto some leading company that created a market that didn't exist before - (easier, unless they innovate faster than you LOL).

  38. Think about it: no moving parts, no fuel, works at least 20-30 years. Just put up the panels on a fixed frame, connect with inverters and buffer with a Li-ion battery (also without moving parts). Scale by adding more of the same. Just copy+paste.

  46. Elon stated back when his 2018 Tesla stock incentive plan became public that he needs the money to fund the colonization of Mars. So I would expect him to slowly sell his Tesla stake to fund the build out of Mars. Although it's conceivable that he manages to make that a profitable endeavor as well - mainly depends on how badly people want to go to Mars.

  48. I think you will need a space suit for every inhabitant anyway. It's like having enough lifeboats on ships for every passenger. You think Elon will send people to Mars saying "no space suit needed, trust my habitat, bro". Cost of space suit will quickly go <$1m anyway as manufacturing scale goes up. Most of the $130M is likely development cost that spreads over all suits produced.

  50. We have power outlets everywhere. Every home and every business has them. Not every home has a gas pump. We have far better infrastructure for electricity than for gas.
