At my former employer we regularly sent packages worth >$500k overseas and always used a freight forwarder (e.g. DB Schenker). You get to send on defined INCOTERMS which precisely regulate transfer of risk, who pays for what part of the transport and who pays for customs duty - and of course we had transport insurance for the full value of the content. Also notably our transport insurance was with a separate insurance company, not with the freight forwarder. These freight forwarders also are very competent regarding customs etc. Stuff always arrived within ~1 week across the globe. We always used tilt and shock watches on all crates, to be able to prove when crates had been mishandled. These watches triggered only a few times, and in the 10 years I worked there we never actually had any damaged goods (although sometimes the crates themselves were damaged - most often the pallet "feet"). For small stuff that doesn't require a crate we used UPS and FedEx - never DHL. That small stuff (spare parts) could still be worth >$1000 and often be time critical too.

Would you say a package has higher chance of "survival" in the conveyor belt jungle if it's bigger and a proper box? I mean there must be a threshold of size where it's impossible to be stuck somewhere without causing noticeable disruption.

Nick, do you think it's a thing that packages that look valuable to staff get intentionally "lost" ?

@Andrew-tl9gk You can pay 70€ extra to get insurance up to 5000€ on oversears shipments at DHL
