But wouldn't your conviction there's no free will undercut the very claim there's no free will? That is, if you cannot freely think that free will doesn't exist, then doesn't that potentially invalidate that thought itself?

@raulepure9840 Well let me ask: take the belief that you cannot be 50 years old until you have been 30 years old. Are you forced to believe this? If so, then could you be forced not to believe it?

I was mostly won over until she stated human level intelligence is a real possibility. On what basis? Show us the code for human consciousness. It's just an unsupported speculation.

Yes, I'm apt to think it's a bit like the contingency argument. Maybe we think we know more than we actually do. For example, maybe the cosmos has no beginning or end. And similarly, maybe we don't understand consciousness enough to know that it might well behave differently than non-conscious things.

I've been thinking that perhaps the conviction free will doesn't exist is self-refuting. Under total determinism, you cannot freely choose your own thoughts. So that would include the thought or conviction that free will doesn’t exist. Now I’m sure I must be missing something here. So any thoughts welcome.

@turundtor891 Well here's a basic question I have, which I have not solved yet. Does knowledge require free will?
1
@turundtor891 I'm just speculating. There are certain things we seem to have absolute knowledge of: such as, you can't be 50 years unless you were once 30 years old. But under determinism you could be made to have the false belief you could be 50 before you were 30. But if in fact we cannot be made to have such a false belief, it means we seemingly have the free will to know absolutely that is true. SO, the claim of 100% determinism seems to undermine our confidence that determinism is true. I'm not expressing this very well, but I hope I might have given a flavor or what I mean. cheers

@turundtor891 Interesting, thanks. Now let me ask you, how can we know for sure we have no free will at all? Or are you saying it's merely likely that we don't have any?

@turundtor891 Thank you for your thoughts. Nice discussion.
