@LoireValleyChateaux Oops, I'm sorry. I thought you were talking about the Arbery killing. Yes, an obvious hate crime, even if race wasn't the motive. You have to have hate in your heart even if you mow down members of your own race.

You are amputating context. While it was a spontaneous act of self-defense no doubt, it was ultimately triggered by Travis' decision to point his gun directly at Arbery several seconds before he became a legitimate threat. So while I would argue against first or even 2nd degree murder, a manslaughter type of offense seems the appropriate crime, which still calls for a significant jail sentence. We can't condone people going around committing assault with a deadly weapon when they are the ones recklessly provoking people who have yet to indicate an intent to harm.

Except that it's unlikely the third man, Bryan, set out to murder him. He left his rifle at home.

Because he used his car to prevent Arbery from getting away. In the trial, I believe it was also speculated he assaulted Arbery with his car in an attempt to run him over.

Because the evidence of a hate crime at this point is speculative.

I agree. But here we have someone going way beyond defending their neighborhood. Travis pointed his gun directly at Arbery when he still hadn't even reached the truck. . No doubt it was this escalation that caused Arbery to grab the gun. You cannot be reckless when defending your neighborhood and expect peace to result.

@Jonathan-mt9up "The escalation began" Not violent escalation, not armed assault with a deadly weapon. You simply cannot put that in the same category as pulling a gun on someone. Apples/oranges. But even if you could, you cannot overlook the fact that Travis had no right to aim a loaded gun at Arbery when Arbery was still some 5-10 seconds away from them. We all have our biases, but to fail to digest the reckless nature of what Travis did is almost willful ignorance, IMO.
