Because when flying a safe airline, the odds of dying are 10s of millions to one per flight. Can you match that in your own vehicle?

True. But consider that a terrorist bomb might also prevent an accident that otherwise would have happened due to the airport being shut down.

If the world went by zero tolerance standards, there would be almost no accidents. Another flaw of humankind.

That's the lazy man's way out. More likely he was a victim of heuristics: errors that, especially under stress, can happen completely outside our conscious awareness.

Why should they?

It may have been a rational decision though. But if not, you cannot call it an unsafe decision.

@kaizersolze Because, and here I guess, based on the alleged argument among the KLM crew, there was also the risk that because of the onslaught of all the diverted traffic at Las Palmas, there might be a long wait for fuel once they arrived there. BTW, where did it say they had enough fuel to make it back to Amsterdam? I don't recall reading that anywhere. Nor would it make any sense, given the time pressure they were under. Bottom line, this was a logistics issue, not a safety one.

@kaizersolze Of course. Very few except maybe the Dutch government would disagree. Why he did is a matter of some speculation.

Enough.

What's coming from the US?

@dontspikemydrink9382 But not as much responsibility as the others.

Hmm, I didn't see your post re Dan Air, I assume this was the 1980 event? . But it's my impression that one has no business flying through cloud unless monitored by ground radar. So, all parties involved were culpable. If I am wrong, please correct my impression

The study of heuristics shows that even highly experienced people can make mistakes that are outside of conscious awareness. Thus they cannot be detected as they happen even though it seems utterly obvious to an outside observer. No one is immune. And when under stress, these mistakes are much more likely to happen. Could this have played a role in this accident?

Where would you put it?
