  1. +Vengeance "when will white people learn it will never be acceptable to use that word" Because there is no consensus among people of good will that your view is the only correct one? Or if there is such a consensus, it has not been demonstrated by you. How could a vew like that even be proven? To some people, context is key. To you, it isn't. So how do we resolve that? Whenever I hear things like "never" "always" or "all" my usual red flag goes up: here's another case of people reducing the world into rigid black and white categories. To me, that's what you're doing here: assuming the entire civilized world would agree with you. Sorry, unless the subject is killing 3-year-olds in cold blood, there is little absolute consensus on anything else. Talk host David Brudnoy here in Boston was once chastised by a black woman he was having dinner with because he used the phrase "Saturday night in n----er town." But as he explained, he was making an historical reference. In his mind, quoting from history to make a point is legitimate. I never once accept the criticism he was racist. I'll give my own example: I love to impersonate, and one of my favorite little skits for my friends is to pretend I'm a racist, and in them I've used the "n" word. But the whole point of it is that humor is often a much more powerful way to make evil and ignorant and stupid people look evil stupid and ignorant. Sorry, there is no consensus among thoughtful people that the "n" word is absolutely 100% off limits to whites at all times. Let's get over it. More pressing issues in life than Bill Maher's jokes.

  3. While I have questions about the severity of the penalties, I did no hear hate in this mother's vloice at all. She retained composure in a vary emotional situation and even offered empathy for the McMichael family. What was she supposed to do, congratulate Travis for ending her son's life? And make no mistake, when you aim a loaded gun at someone from a distance of at least 50 feat, you have created reckless endangerment. Denying this is the irreducible delusion driving the defense of these men.

Travis repeatedly called her a "nigger lover" for dating a Black man Gregory then said: "All those Blacks are nothing but trouble and I wish they'd all die Bryan stated on 2019's MLK Day that he was "working so all the niggers can take off", . . . describing the MLK Day's parade as the "monkey day parade" . . . . stated that a Black man that his daughter was dating would "fit right in with the monkeys", The Conversation: shows pic of Greg attending KKK rally AP news: Travis: . . . shared. . . story ... two Black customers upset about cold food at a Georgia restaurant, using a racial slur to comment that he would beat the Black people “to death if they did that to . . .my mother and sister.” ...added that he would have no more remorse than putting down a rabid animal. Courthouse News Travis: video of a Black man lighting a firecracker inside his nostril prompted him to comment, “Been cooler if it blew that fucking nigger’s head off.” ----------- Other than committing violence, could it get any worse? If Travis' phone wasn't encrypted, God knows what else was on there.

  5. I don't think anyone necessarily lied here. Even Woody and Cathy Young , for example, don't accuse Dylan of lying. Mia may well have come to sincerely believe her daughter, for all we know. There's only so much we can be certain of. There's certainly no obvious smoking gun that says Dylan is lying. Is there?

  6.  @rl12345  I'm being a little lazy because I don't have all my sources in front of me. But, only if its convenient and you feel like, kindly feel free to share the way her story changed. I'm unaware of what she said about civil court. I'll try to look that up. I personally don't find Woody any more trustworthy. He certainly was wrong about the train set suddenly entering the picture. If he were being totally credible, why didn't HE challenge her to meet him in person and query him directly. If I were innocent, I'd fight much harder to clear my name. In his self-serving response to her in the NY Times, he said "of course" he was innocent. What made him think his readers would know he was innocent? That's insulting the reader. I think he's a total and complete jerk. I am not about to declare him guilty because of this. But he's a man with extremely poor boundaries, and his claim he sees no moral issue with the Soon-Yi relationship is indicative of this. His actions tore the family apart. Even Cathy Young, a Woody supporter, and who is a favorite of mine, called it deplorable.

  7.  @rl12345  Thank you Yes, I remember the part about trouble distinguishing reality from fantasy. As far as changing stories, the HBO series plays one of the videos of Mia asking questions of Dylan, time stamped the very next day after the alleged charges. Once again, journalist Cathy Young admitted it was convincing. There was no sense, at least in that video, of Mia pushing her to any conclusion. She said he touched her "privates." I'm wondering where she got that from. Could Mia have implanted this suggestion within just 24 hours and have the story more or less stick from then on? I guess anything's possible. To me, after digesting most of the major claims and facts, my intuition is more in favor of Dylan's side of the story. But you can make a pretty good claim in support of Woody too. So I doubt there will ever be a solid proof either way.

  8.  @rl12345  Very good arguments. But I have taken to distrusting Moses because Moses sided with Mia and the other siblings at first. It was many years later he did this complete about face. Without explaining this disconnect, and except for Dylan and Soon-Yi, all the other children siding with Mia on the abuse question, that makes him in my book a more questionable witness. In addition Moses was 100% wrong about no train in the attic. As you probably saw, one of the later HBO episodes pointed out that the police went up to the attic for obvious reasons, making a very detailed diagram of where everything was. Lo and Behold, there is the train set! So Moses must not have known what was in his own attic, I guess. As I just stated in another thread, it shows you can never trust anyone's claims.

  9.  @rl12345  Obviously you are more informed than I. Did you see the police diagram showing the train set's position in the attic? I think Dylan's story mentioned that early on. Any thoughts on those "20 missing minutes?" I had not realized how concerned they were at the time until I saw how it was presented in the HBO series. Maybe that's a staged presentation. But Woody told Mia in one of the phone calls where she want to know where he was, that 'the truth will come out." I don't think he ever gave the truth on that point after 30 years. Do you have a record of him ever explaining himself? Why not just say, "we went for a walk," or we were playing in the attic with the train, or whatever.

  10.  @rl12345  Regarding Moses, the thing I remember most are his allegations of Mia's constant abuse. Did he ever say anything about that one way or the other before he came out with that more recently? That's my impression, he wasn't saying that before 2014 or whatever it was.

  14.  @Scotty_Spacemonsterkiller  "separate issue" Yes, it is. But on Youtube there's such a predictable pattern of tribalism, I was half expecting you to say they should have gone free. I might be a little more cautious than you in describing her comments as giving her soul to hate. It's very common for grieving people to say things like "I hope you rot in hell." It seems losing a child to an act of violence often results in this kind of reaction. In the Kim Potter case, I thought to myself, Duante's mother had obviously completely forgiven her son, a common criminal who did far worse things than Potter, but could not have it in her to forgive Potter. But then I thought, I cut her a complete pass because who am I to criticize a grieving mother. Maybe one day she will. The other reason I might agree with you is because as hideous was the McMichael's crime, I'm not 100% convinced it was malice murder. I see it as more akin to malice manslaughter, if there is such a thing.
