"that the accident had nothing to do with the DC-10." It wasn't the primary cause, but it would be inaccurate to say that the design played no role. The accident report cited lack of redundancy with the leading edge slats and stall warning systems. It criticized the design of the pylons as contributing to the vulnerability of damage; and issues of quality control, resulting in many planes leaving the assembly line with defective pylons. A more general criticism was the failure to consider "multiple malfunctions resulting from a single failure." cheers

KLM had some valid points to make; and I would add that, thought the controllers didn't make any blatant mistakes, the Spanish government did all they could do to hinder the investigation. So yes, governments and corporations.

@supermanepic15 "if they failed than why try again 8 years later" For the same reason people try to diet multiple times after failing? Or am I missing something.

Sounds like you're very knowledgable about aircraft systems. I think the DC-10 fear was way overdone, even though at the time I was afraid of them. Even in the Paris crash, it could be argued that MD could not have guessed that Turkish Airlines would tamper with the safety systems. Had they not done so, there would have probably never been a cargo door crash. cheers

Nope. sorry, you're wrong.

@supermanepic15 Actually, I now recall, I don't think they were trying to destroy the buildings in 2001 as they believed even crashing airliners into them would not likely cause collapse. That's all I can really offer. Needless to say they were delighted when they did collapse.

@djpalindrome Hi, The above conversation has been about the Chicago crash, not the cargo door crash. But I agree entirely the Paris crash was primarily the result of McDonnell Douglas' denial about their own culpability. I've read all four books about that crash, and one of the little known or mentioned facts is that Turkish Airlines was also a major player in this failure. Just a few months or so before the crash, their maintenance people (presumably) tampered with the locking pins, turning them the wrong way, thus eliminating any undue resistance to warn the baggage handler the door was not closed properly. This alteration was conclusively proved by the French investigators. That is most likely why the plane was able to escape disaster until 1974. cheers

He knew something, but no proof he knew the details.

@supermanepic15 I can only give you my personal speculation. The terr-ist themselves were quoted as saying they were surprised the buildings collapsed. Even without the collapses this event shook America to its core. Before any collapses, we were all in a state of shock. Were you alive back then? We were scared as never before. That is the goal of terr-ism. No collapses were required. The searing images of the towers, and the people jumping was already unprecedented. No previous T attack on the US or its assets ever came close.
