"that the accident had nothing to do with the DC-10." It wasn't the primary cause, but it would be inaccurate to say that the design played no role. The accident report cited lack of redundancy with the leading edge slats and stall warning systems. It criticized the design of the pylons as contributing to the vulnerability of damage; and issues of quality control, resulting in many planes leaving the assembly line with defective pylons. A more general criticism was the failure to consider "multiple malfunctions resulting from a single failure." cheers

Sounds like you're very knowledgable about aircraft systems. I think the DC-10 fear was way overdone, even though at the time I was afraid of them. Even in the Paris crash, it could be argued that MD could not have guessed that Turkish Airlines would tamper with the safety systems. Had they not done so, there would have probably never been a cargo door crash. cheers

@djpalindrome Hi, The above conversation has been about the Chicago crash, not the cargo door crash. But I agree entirely the Paris crash was primarily the result of McDonnell Douglas' denial about their own culpability. I've read all four books about that crash, and one of the little known or mentioned facts is that Turkish Airlines was also a major player in this failure. Just a few months or so before the crash, their maintenance people (presumably) tampered with the locking pins, turning them the wrong way, thus eliminating any undue resistance to warn the baggage handler the door was not closed properly. This alteration was conclusively proved by the French investigators. That is most likely why the plane was able to escape disaster until 1974. cheers
