+Boat Axe That doesn't really follow logically. Whether the buses have seat belts or not, we are already making all of these childrens' safety decisions for them, including whether the buses should be equipped with shoulder harnesses, rear facing seats, or extra emergency exits. All of these things would no doubt make buses even safer. And they all have a cost. Should children have a right to every conceivable safety enhancement until they become free adults? The issue is really not about seat belts, or about children not being adults. It's about, what is the appropriate level of safety given the costs.

But the more important point is that money spent on bus belts is a poor bargain any way you look at it. Saving 6 lives per year at best, that kind of money could better be spent, for example, on educating people that school buses are on average 80 times safer for your kid to be in, than in your private auto. Far more lethal to children than school buses, whose body design and size make them much more injury resistant. cheer

Probably because transit in general, and school buses in particular ,are orders of magnitude safer than private cars.

In Massachusetts, I seem them all the time going over the speed limit on highways. Amazing they don't kill more often.

Good points, but it's been said school bus drivers are far better screened than your average car driver, who probably hasn't been screened since his drivers test decades ago. Private autos are about 80 times more lethal to kids than are school buses.

"it blows me away there's no seatbelts on school buses that's like so f** stupid" With an average of 6 school bus deaths per year, the cost would be questionable. Spend the money instead on campaigns to get kids out of private cars and into school buses. They are about 80 times safer for your kid than is your car.
