@vedawerner8981 Can someone please explain why a teacher needs to address a student as a pronoun. Has anyone ever come up to you and said, "Hi there she. How are you today?" So why complain? Just call people by name instead of by pronoun. Have I missed something?

@vedawerner8981 I don't think you read my post. Please read again.

@vedawerner8981 I don't follow that line of thinking. Has your teacher ever called you a pronoun????

@vedawerner8981 No need to apologize or delete. I'm just trying to imagine a scenario where a teacher HAS to use a pronoun. Usually we call people by their names. And when we say "he did this" or "she did that" you can always use the person's name instead. So that's what is confusing me. If I, a teacher, don't wish to use new gender pronouns, why can't I just avoid pronouns altogether? Give me an example where a teacher needs to use a singular pronoun instead of a student's actual name.

@vedawerner8981 So your teacher once said to you, "How are you She?" instead of "How are you Veda?"

@vedawerner8981 Those are fair points. Here's a hypothetical. Suppose a teacher decides she wants to use three kinds of pronouns: 1 for females, one for males, and one for transgender people. Would that be OK?

@vedawerner8981 But my main point, really, is that if a teacher feels uncomfortable using the new pronouns, she can just refer to the person by name. It may be less convenient in some cases, but hardly impossible. It's a lot easier than making a big fuss about it.

@vedawerner8981 I am with the trans gender pronouns in spirit, but I think there's still a case that it's inappropriate to make up one for yourself and insist that is the only correct pronoun to be enforced on others. Take for example the word "they." It doesn't identify gender. Should that make it offensive to trans people?

@vedawerner8981 Or alternatively, let's say a teacher wishes to simplify all pronouns. So he gets rid of he, she, her, him, as well as all the other gender pronouns. And he comes up with his own completely gender neutral pronouns: say the word "hir" for all singular pronouns; and trer for all singular possessive pronouns. Now we have just two simple words to remember when addressing someone that are completely gender neutral. It's far simpler to remember. Is there really a principled case that a transgender person can make against someone else's proposed gender-neutral pronouns?

@vedawerner8981 Yes, true. Thank you very much for a nice discussion!
