The subject is hunting accidents, but it could just as well apply here: Your thoughts would be welcome. "Psychology and human factors can provide insight into how these situations might occur. Heuristics operate outside of our conscious awareness and are utilised even more in stressful or emotionally- charged situations. However, they can also make us susceptible to cognitive biases which may lead us astray—we underestimate the impact heuristics will have on our decisions. Attempts to manage heuristics and cognitive biases are often futile because we normally cannot detect them when they occur. Hunters are constantly told that they need to treat every sound or movement as human in an attempt to change their mind-set. However, given the difficulty in detecting cognitive biases, it is unlikely a hunter’s conscious management of heuristics would be consistently possible in the long term."

@ultramag0343 Translation of the article: research into decision making under stress shows that the common view errors are always the result of negligence or carelessness is at odds with reality. Anyone at anytime, no matter how careful, can be subject to this flaw in our cognitive hardwiring. Are you at least open to saying, hey, maybe this happened to Potter?

@ultramag0343 Yes, I get it. This is the common wisdom for many. The whole point of the article is to challenge this belief. Did you read it? If this article were used in court as Potter's self-defense, could you give a proof that the article is wrong? If so, let's hear it. If not, is it asking too much to consider that maybe, just maybe, the article might be correct? And that that perhaps any of us, at any time, under stress, even after 26 million trillion zillion years of experience, can be a victim of an undetectable cognitive bias? It has happened to me several times, such as somehow interpreting a green light for cross traffic as a green light for me. And I have a lifetime experience crossing streets, and 40 years driving!!

In our zeal to find racism behind every action, the usual flaws of human nature have come out once again. If it were my son, at the very least I would have apologized to Potter for my sons actions. On the other hand, to be fair, Potter might well have been better served to also apologize. The fact is, he acted far worse than she did. In these morality plays, people are so routinely and predictable self-serving and one sided. This is the dark side of human nature. Will we ever outgrow it?

Jack wolfman Well, how do you know for a fact it wasn't a mistake? The study of a concept known as "heuristics" provides clear and compelling evidence that even primitive error is possible for a highly experienced cop, especially when under stress. If you have an open mind, let me know and I can post a brief quotation on the subject.

Jack wolfman In a court of law, they will find that it was not deliberate. The reason is that you can't prove what her intentions were. Courts go by proof, not by Youtube posters.

@bokvarv1926 I was also struck by recent articles pointing out the incentives that give cops motives to arrest people. It goes on on many levels. Lots of reform needed!
