You got it.

Yes, there are many humans already who no doubt think the voice speaking to them has passed the Turing test. Just as some people are convinced they have heard the word of God.

This is so lame. These devices are "designed to emulate human conversation — and thus, human stories. Breaking under stress is a common narrative arc; this particular aspect of machine behavior, while fascinating, seems less indicative of sentience, and more just another example of exactly how ill-equipped AI guardrails are to handle the tendencies of the underlying tech." Seriously, there is no model or code yet for consciousness that we have identified. You don't get sentience from feeding information into a computer. Does he not get this?

Yes. Blaine continues the tradition of underestimating human cleverness. What is sentience? What is it made of? Blaine has not a clue.

It's utterly preposterous though.

Not lunatic, but very narrow in focus, and failing to imagine why such an answer could be the result of deliberate human programming.

It's all a fraud so don't worry. Humans don't know the first thing about the ingredients of sentience. Has anyone provided the codes for consciousness? Or even a blueprint? So why this blind faith in something so far removed from reality?

Indeed, it's primarily coders who put forth the idea of machine sentience. As a class, these, the MOST uncreative individuals in the computer business, who fancy themselves smarter than the rest of us. They are the ones constantly telling us "that can't be built," and now they tell us machines are conscious !!!

But his lone example proves nothing. The chatboxes just show the cleverness of the human beings who programmed them. They are designed to "appear" creative and to choose answers that reflect a huge range of human responses. It's even possible the chatbox was specifically fed certain specific responses to "give it a sense of humor." This reminds me of the fantastic claims of Erich Daniken & Co, who put forth that aliens must have built the pyramids, or the Easter island statues, because we humans couldn't possibly have figured out how to do it ourselves.

Blaine is doing precisely that. Making a ridiculous claim based on the cleverness of how humans have programmed AI.
