What happened was that the 2 defendants started to chase the victim and in the process committed armed assault and in the opinion of most experts, created reckless endangerment. Arbery, perhaps due to his mental illness, reacted by trying to grab the gun that was probably pointing at him. So one of the defendants shot him as he grabbed the weapon.
