  1. This could well be the modern day version. That it was somewhat less brutal, and prosecuted to the max, could well confirm the theory, espoused by such diverse thinkers as Noam Chomsky, Peter Singer and Steven Pinker, of an "expanding circle of morality" over the last several centuries. Perhaps some modest progress has been made since the days of witch hunts, slavery, and cat burning in the city of Paris. Maybe I am too optimistic?

  6. Not Bryan. He does not deserve life, unless you believe that punishment should not be proportional to the crime committed.

  7. Not sure if I agree with that. People video for various reasons, such as capturing hard evidence of a crime. The motive will differ from one to another.

  8.  @oliverseoliverse  Thank you for your reply. My response would be that Bryan apparently started filming long before he knew the Ms were doing something wrong. As the phone records show, there was no contact between him and the Ms either the night before, or at any time that day before the chase started. On the other hand, it's clear he was a typical southern racist at the very least. I do agree though it was stupidity incarnate to think that video would be to your favor. It proved conclusively Travis committed armed assault before Arbery even reached the vehicle. That all said, while I have little sympathy for the Ms, I don't think Bryan's actions are proportional to a life sentence. The felony murder laws are highly inadequate, as this case especially shows.

Yes Can a white racist man in a moment of stress instinctively yell out F-- N-- after a surprise assault? yes Example: Paula Dean admitted she used the N word after being robbed by a black man. But she didn't commit a hate crime. This is not to say these men are not racist scum. Of course they are. But I find it funny how anger and blind rage at racists allow us to pretend we know FOR SURE their mindset.

  10. Well I think only partly so. Kudos to sending them to jail. But the sentences are excessive. We don't even have proof of 1st degree murder or premeditated murder. Life sentences are supposed to about worst case crimes. These fall short of that. The principle of proportionality has been lost.

  11. Bryan certainly doesn't deserve life. That's a grotesque mismatch between crime and punishment. Tell me, do you believe punishment should be proportional to the crime?

  14.  @BellaDrips  Reminds me of the equal rights amendment. Since the Constitution already guarantees everyone's rights, especially when you consider Title VII of 1964: "Title VII prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin. "
