Britain did have "elections". Cos they had local representatives that did things.. and it was paid positions too... as far as I recall.... They were called "Functional Groups".... and reps come together to discuss thing. Ask anybody about this !... So why are people saying that this was not as so !!!!! .... The problem is that, those who were both in functional groups.. and then the reps... it is meant to equalise the society. But now.. it looks like, there is no equalities. Some people took advantages and ran off even. Or so. This is why nobody seems to care any more. Cos they don't "respect" the existing people. Why the people "respected" others were basically because they were also related in one form or another too. and so therefore doing business, which meant it raises both yourself and your families too. (And also extended families too.) So when more of the mainland individuals came over.. a lot of the people kicked off... cos it was intruding on their own hometowns. (By right... this is an old traditional law as well... with regards to families.) So some historians are saying that, the old chinese laws existed. As well as the Western laws in parallel... and hence the "one country, two system" concept came about... and the subsequent latter group of people... are using English to marginalise, and to manipulate the finance part.. which is ruining these basic concepts.. and even the old Chinese laws as well... THIS is why people are kicking off too. Cos they arranged their lives to be supporting such things !!!! And the current so called "Funds"... (a fund, can be actually ran by a child, somebody that is not even 18 years old?)... And these so called "Family Office"..... which is like... when was this introduced? It did not existed befor ein the past. Especially where merchant tradings were concerned. So how come the locals did not have these family offices, and were respected... but they are forced to become actual "indigenous"... and then... the merchants... their wealth were absorbed by the financiers??? Why the inequalities here? Do we need to bring back in lineage laws, in order for people to back off here ???????? Cos this is what Japan has created. And South Korea has created too... and even in Taiwan, they don't say it.. but I know that they have implemented such things too... and have so called "army ex leaders" to push back sometimes.. when they deviate. Same with Japan. Their so called ex-samurai/landlords/Yukuta......

@Andrew-rc3vh : The Brits that were there, left... Cos many were Lords etc. And they left with their families. The ones that were left.. or the subsequent people were NOT the local Cantonese.. and it was NOT the Brits... and it was more or less an "open door policy"... of migrants. And THIS is not being handled. And this is part of the issue too. There are Pakistanis... some were some of the older Indians.. but then, suddenly "muslims" out of nowhere-ville as well.. Even the local papers did NOT recognise this at all ? And even recently... SOME decent writers are FINALLY... writing from THEIR perspectives !!! It never was a free for all at all... and the Brits gave it back.. cos it couldn't control its borders anyway. After 1997.. It had gotten worst ! Thai people. Filipinos. Indonesians. etc etc etc etc. And then, not the mainland people too. Not that the mainland are being discriminated.. but many of them violate existing local laws.. despite people teaching them etc. And then also a lot of ex-financiers as well.. taking funds... and running with it.. and ruining even MORE of the city too... Cos nobody is taking control.. and this is why the financial mess that is the PRC now.. happened. THAT did not take long, did it ? Cos nobody disputed it. And that move, was to anchor the USA from economic collapse... so what is happening now? .... China wants to integrate its own financial system with the world, but without the authorisation of the world first? This will lead to war. (And when we say "global finance", we don't mean those "mom and pop stores", which China is SO insistent on...... ) The situation is getting worst and worst.... Just a lot of diplomats and not much actions or inactions....
I don't even know how come HK was so transient... in nature... As my grandfather's hometown.. I am quite surprised at its transient nature.. to the Nth degree. There is no Cantonese culture left any more at all any way. Just a typical ex-pat foreign party town, with lapping SE Asian ladies, and lady boys etc.... (Despite there being a strong Christian or strong Catholic churches everywhere in SE Asia.) That is a joke for a start. Cos nobody that has sex, that many times.. and with their own family members, but without knowing this... and then attend churches.... etc etc etc. And the state does NOT steps in either !!!! 300 million, 90 million people, and it keeps on growing... exponentially. No wonder HK is taken back and strict laws are thrown down. People does not even practise family planning either. So much for these so called "foreign businesses".. indeed...!!!!!!
And then the stupid communist model and Marxism argument.... junk. What junk. No wonder they come down tough. Yet, the remaining chinese assumes it would be like communism, rather than just basic Confucianism and Chinese FAMILY values... !!!!

Well... this is the thing.... cos this whole "We don't like the USA" angle... that only happened AFTER 97... Cos before that, it was a mere small place... doing its own thing.. and a lot of BRitish companies, and some European companies entered into HK as well to do business. And that partially did happen, only because Britain was also part of the EU too. So those other EU countries decided to do businesses with China. And of course, you also have the backing of the SE Asian countries who also contributed too.. and everything seems to work well.... And this uplifted China, like, A LOT.... (but where did those money gone to in the end?).... So many raised their own countries, back into SE Asia... others, just left... and now... It tries to.. take some form of control. But this kind of case, is like, a "retrospective" case as well now... Cos whatever the outcome, you cannot recreate back the way that the investments happened. (And of course... all or most SE Asians have left too... along with Europeans.. etc etc etc....) He would not be in this predicament, if it was not for the Sino-Joint Declaration being signed etc. (And what China, that is, the PRC is wanting to do.. is actually to rollout their own control... all over... and still want to keep the financial centre, and do one belt one road, but this is not possible any more.) Or at all.
(And really, this is also about businesses and money too.... Everybody inside China, knows that it is trying to do "green finance"... whereas the "old commonwealth" is trying to do "old finance".. and we can see who is winning here really.... So... don't trust everything that you read either.)
