Long-time female flight attendant here : The TRUTH is that airlines (for at least the past 20 years) literally FIGHT OVER the chance to hire Black Naval and Air Force pilots. EVERY airline wants to improve their “diversity” hiring….WITH QUALIFIED PILOTS…. The “dirty little secret” in the industry: When the push to increase the # of female pilots was made (by the Feds) — STANDARDS WERE LOWERED — as almost all hires were “F.L.A.P.s” ( unflattering abbreviation for private/light airline pilots)….This is the SAME pool they are proposing making the “diversity” hires from…..I was involved in two serious incidents—both, the result of poor decision-making on the part of the pilot (and both pilots were F.L.A.P.S )….

@gigaman6 Recruitment used to be primarily from the Services ( Navy, Air Force & Marines). When the airlines were pressed to increase female representation among flight crews, recruiters were forced to turn to the private sphere. 95% of female pilots (from my airline) come from private industry (UPS, FEDEX) and former private pilots….( I’ve spoken to more than one who admitted that her training didn’t come close to the standards demanded from the services ). Most carriers solution to the skills deficit of these new pilots was to double (sometimes triple) their time in flight simulators (with an instructor) & to add classroom time. As new pilots usually only have to qualify on one type of aircraft (say, a B-757) prior to flying as a 2nd Officer, most decent pilots will pass. And most will make competent pilots. My point : They are not AS competent, lack the flight skills & emergency training that pilots who have spent six years, 24/7 training by the best flight instructors in the country—and it often shows. All of the Black pilots I’ve flown with have been former Navy. I wonder what they think about this?
