  1. What is often overlooked : Isabella was The FIRST woman to rule a major, Christian, European country….And she paved the way for Mary & Elizabeth I of England (who came almost a CENTURY later)…. Indeed, it has been said that had it not been for the excellent example of Isabella (proving that a “mere woman” could competently rule a major kingdom) there might never have been the Virgin Queen….
