I have studied Japan for over 20 years (and lived there, as well)….Few civilisations in history have been as creative, brilliant….or brutal as the Japanese. I have often thought that, had its population been larger throughout its history, it certainly would have dominated its neighbour, China, and would, no doubt, have been a far more difficult challenge for the West in later centuries….
Unfortunately, along with its tremendous assets, come the reverse : an unimaginable brutality that has been in the Japanese character since its earliest history (the centuries of Samarai warfare led to a bizarre combination of barbarism, along with “blood etiquette rituals,” as gruesome as they are fascinating)….Howevet, to attempt a comparison with “US Imperialism” and the mass-genocide/mass-rapes/mass-war crimes of the Japanese during WWII is more than a bit disingenuous of this channel….The Japanese butchered millions….
While there are few peoples I admire as much as the Japanese, I do so clear-eyed….as with every culture, acknowledging the positive AND the negative aspects….
