Next to being with the first wave on Omaha, that was the worst, most hellish & chaotic place to be for GIs ( not helped by the fact that Eisenhower was AWOL—due to a Nazi plot on his life—and that 1/2 the troops had already been in the field too long, the other 1/2 being brand, new recruits, whose life expectancy during the battle was less than 12 hours…. Also….never-seen-before arctic temps during the battle ensured that thousands of the men either froze to death, or lost hands & feet to frostbite…..Hell on earth.

I’ve been flying for 12 years with Delta….They’re very lucky this didn’t happen later in the flight, when they were at cruising altitude (@ 28-32,000 ft), as the force (and vacuum) of an explosive decompression at that altitude would have sucked everything out of the aircraft within @ a 30-ft radius not SECURELY belted in….
