You can tell that this is a GERMAN production — few other EU countries would so openly pander to China’s vision of itself (although, as this was made several years ago, such soft propaganda might be overlooked)… ….It’s otherwise a very fun & informative documentary. (I would consider editing the last 3-4 mins of the doc, however….a bit over-the-top :)

….Voltaire’s vision of Chinese dynastic leadership being “the best” way of ruling was…a bit misguided….Chinese Emperors (like earlier European rulers) were absolute despots—with horrific methods of the death penalty handed out for the most minor infractions (Matteo Ricci—the Jesuit Monk featured in this doc—was himself a victim of such arbitrary punishments; thrown into prison as an old man on trumped-up charges, he died from his injuries)…. …Chinese Courts were rife with corruption, back-stabbing & eunuch uprisings…. Perhaps if he had actually LIVED in China, Voltaire might have been able to formulate a more accurate picture of Chinese Dynastic rule…

@TaoDeChing-ls5gz ….If you’re referring solely to inventiveness, ingenuity & curiosity about the Natural World, few students of world history would argue with you (that those of European & East Asian heritage displayed an acute curiosity, and the drive to constantly “improve” existing systems)…. However, both Europe & East Asia, it can be argued, valued “individual” excellence & achievement over “community achievement & stability”….S. Americans tended to form very homogeneous, smaller, multi-generational homes & communities, where group dynamics were valued over those of the individual (and, as for Latin Americans “not forming proper cities,” I think the Incas & the Aztecs might beg to differ with you)….
