  2.  @mentallibral  I disagree on several points. That half the population of the Netherlands supported the Nazis to me is unbelievable. I would like to know where you found that information. That the Germans invaded the Netherlands and took over the government and placed them under a Reich Commissar is undeniable. If that is not conquest I don't' know what is. It was stated in books the the food supply was interrupted deliberately as a punishment See Ben Shepherd Hitler's Soldiers p 489-90. As to your final point I believe the soldiers mentioned loved fascism and supported an aryan idea of superiority and hated democracy. That they hated Bolshevism was also true. Further I think the majority of the country considered them traitors to the Netherlands. I suggest you put your contentions to History Hustle for his comments.

  3. They were under control of the army most of the time. Since they were divisions in 1943 for example they were in Army Group Don possibly I have the name wrong because they changed it several times but they were under Manstein for a lengthy time. Himmler never commanded them in combat till very late 1944-45. He had no qualifications as an army group commander.

Does not personal responsibility enter in to it? Are they ok because of the war. Why did the other people not commit atrocities? It is their victims that deserve compassion.

  17.  @MrAdamF  War crimes were planned by the Nazis even before the invasion of the USSR. In March 1941 before a single soldier entered the USSR the Wehrmacht agreed to cooperate with murder squads (einsatzgruppen). It is well documented. These were planned and carried out and the excuse that all sides committed crimes is an excuse to try to lessen German responsibility.

  23.  @HistoryHustle  I disagree on the idea that Soviet reisitance was not fierce. According to Overmans the Whermacht had 260,00 killed through November 1941 and this was not including wounded which would be 3 to 4 times as many. This does not include December and January when the Soviet counterattack began.

Hitler made several speeches to the public which he said the Jews would be annihilated and later implied his predictions were coming true. Many Germans heard what had happened from soldiers on the eastern front and the security service reported comments that the bombing and other calamities that were happening was retribution for the treatment of the Jews. The deportation of Jews from Germany was well known and the information from the eastern front about what happened circulated among many Germans. There was even talk that the Security Service (SD) picked up that the bombing and other disasters that happened was in some way a retribution for the killing of the Jews.
