They certainly believed in their ideas. They would have feared that if word got out what they were doing would hurt them in public opinion. That is why they would say evacuated to the East instead of killed.

The figures given by Isaev are 48,360 men on September 11, 1941. The heavy machine guns and the light machine guns machine were only 20 to 25% of authorized strength. However only 1 division had 8,615 men (10 th rifle NKVD) 1 with over 3,000 men, three with over 2000 men and six with1000 or less.. The strength was in the rifle brigades , of the 8 averaged 4,000 men. Some of the units as you can see were very worn down and could be called divisions in name only.

Leningrad had a much bigger population then Stalingrad and they thought Stalingrad would be easier to capture. Also Hitler decided to just surround Leningrad but he seemed to have felt that the speeches he made claiming that Stalingrad was ready to fall and did not want to be seen as backing off.

@dantepndrgn I agree. Stalingrad could not be encircled because of the Volga and supplies could be brought across. The Germans did not have the manpower and equipment to cross the Volga and they would have to face several Soviet armies on the other side of the river.

They did not have enough men to do this and also support the attack on Stalingrad. They had to use Romanians, Hungarians and Italians to protect their flanks on the Don rather than German troops

There was a very important factor which is that the Germans had complete air superiority during the the Don battles and the assault on Stalingrad.

@timobrienwells I have read the same ones and do not see where TIK is wrong in his description of the fighting. Can you supply any specific statements about which he is wrong. I also use Isaev.

@timobrienwells Wait a minute be specific. All you say is it is completely wrong. If you want to convince anyone you have to supply an argument not just say he is wrong. No one will accept only on your assertion.

Stalin thought the city was about to fall and wanted any attack possible to distract the Germans from closing in on Stalingrad.

@timobrienwells Well I have watched the video on Fall Blau. I think it is very well done and correct. I did not watch the oil video because I am not interested. I am watching the Stalingrad video and think it is one of the best done videos on youtube. If you have specific criticism I am willing to listen otherwise I just consider your comments assertions not backed up by any citations.

Yes they did not have the strength to take Stalingrad even after they sent Hoth 4th panzer to Stalingrad instead of the Caucasus. They were over confident and in too much of a hurray to achieve all their aims.
