  2. Both sides were short of food and it depends on what period of time in 1942 you are talking about. The Soviets received food aid from the US and the situation improved as the war went on. The Germans confiscated food from occupied territories to supplement what they produced. It got worse as the war went on. In Stalingrad it depended on how supplies were available. The Soviets (not Russians) often had supply and food shortages as they were supplied from across the Volga. The Germans were at the end of a long and difficult supply line and the amount of food available was insufficient. After they were encircled it became a crisis and starvation followed.

  4. They certainly did fight and when supplies and food ran out starvation became common. They surrendered when it became hopeless.

  5. Much oil to the UK came from the US the Carribean Islands and Venezuela and possibly from Mexico on tankers.
