I recommend Pedro II of Brazil. He was such an amazing figure. He was an abolitionist who used a war to bully slave-owners into letting slaves enlist in the army in exchange for freedom, then took advantage of the war's aftermath to force the issue and destroyed the institution in his country. He was ultimately deposed--at the height of his popularity--in a coup supported by practically nobody, but refused to take his throne back unless he was promised by all factions that doing so would not lead to bloodshed, as he had grown tired of ruling anyway. He was such a beloved, stabilizing figure that even the small clique of men who deposed him regretted doing so after he died.
