He was born on April Fool's Day. Also, his biggest flaw was that the political system he constructed was made only for HIM to operate--he never bothered to explain to anyone else how to make it work in case he was indisposed.

Bismarck didn't even have the decency to attend the man's funeral.

@davidanderson7782 No, he tried to use Wilhelm as a puppet. It's like Simon said: Bismarck ranted rather than taught. He was so vain he kept expecting to be called back and never left any contingency plans in case he wasn't.

In addition, his attempts to keep France politically isolated (all before Wilhelm II came to the throne) backfired wildly, and ultimately played a role in Germany's defeat in WWI. He was too used to bullying his opponents, something that sometimes caused them to receive sympathy that he was trying to prevent them from getting.

@imperiumromanum7375 Wouldn't go that far, but he had his admirable qualities.

That's a bit of "Lost Cause"-style myth (Churchill was something of a Confederate fanboy) based on an imperialist mindset. The Weimar Republic's greatest flaw was that its leaders hated it for petty reasons and didn't care about making it work. Had they tried, things probably wouldn't have been super-great, but it wouldn't have gone to hell and a handbasket so easily when the Depression hit.
