  1. He did hate slavery for moral reasons, but figured getting to abolish it wholesale would get him nowhere, so his platform was keeping it from expanding. That was enough for the South to throw a tantrum after he won, despite their attempts to rig it by simply not giving southern voters the option to vote for him.
