  3. Cortes was sent to establish trade relations with the Aztecs, not conquer them--the Spanish crown thought that colonization of the area would have been too costly and not profitable enough. Cortes decided to conquer them anyway, and as a result he had to spend just as much time fighting off attempts by the crown to arrest him as he did conquering Mexico, either through violence or bribery. It was only after he'd drilled it into their heads that Mexico was a near-bottomless treasure chest that the folks back home let him do as he pleased--by filling a ship from stem to stern with gold and sending it back to Spain as a personal gift to the king. After the conquest, Cortes made sure that the Tlaxcala were well-treated, even taking a few young Tlaxcala princes on future expeditions with him and teaching them about modern warfare.
