  1. Actually, McKinley's supporters wanted Roosevelt kicked upstairs in the hopes of shutting him up. Hanna was horrified and said, "Don't any of you fools realize there's only one life between that madman and the White House?!" Also, for all his virtues, McKinley was more or less a puppet of the robber barons.
